"What's the story, Wishbone?" was the question asked by the theme song of one of the most inspired children's TV shows ever made. Wishbone was a sort of Masterpiece Theater made just for youngsters - although easily enjoyed by adults as well. On Wishbone, children were introduced to the greats of classic literature as they watched a talented Jack Russell Terrier depict such literary luminaries as Ulysses, Romeo, Sherlock Holmes, and Oliver Twist. This book takes the reader behind the scenes to see how this wonderfully educational program was thought up and then put together. The reader learns how both human and animal actors were chosen and how the special challenges of working with a canine star were met. Wishbone Behind the Scenes shows how the child actors were able to combine regular schooling and the fun of childhood with the hard work of playing characters in a regular TV series. It discusses the ways human actors played both contemporary roles and classic roles and the special accommodations they made when acting with dog actors. It shows how the stunts were performed and how a few had unexpected "oopsies." Perhaps most of all, the reader learns how many varied individuals worked to create a show for children that entertained and educated in equal amounts.

Christmas is one of the most dearly cherished holidays for the vast majority of Christians and a holiday appreciated, and even celebrated, by many non-Christians as well. It is celebrated the world over but nowhere more cherished than in America. Despite its popularity - or perhaps because of it - the past several decades have seen controversy about an alleged "War on Christmas." Culprits fingered as the anti-Christmas warriors are varied with "liberals" and "secularists" often accused. However, some people have specifically accused American Jewry of waging war on Christmas. When the Gentile author of this book read some commentators accusing Jews of battling Christmas, she was struck by the irony that Jews have added to Christmas celebrations through song and film. This insight led her to write Christmas Gifts from the Chanukah Crowd: The Extraordinary Contributions of American Jews to Christmas. This book tells the story of how Christmas - which was not celebrated by the earliest Christians -- came to be a beloved tradition. It discusses a genuine "War on Christmas" waged in past centuries - by Christians It tells the stories of popular Christmas songs written or co-written by Jews. It relates Jewish contributions to Christmas-themed motion pictures, some of which have become a cherished part of Christmas celebration. Of course, Christmas is far from the only major December holiday. This book devotes a chapter to the fascinating and inspiring story of Chanukah. This book also discusses the Afrocentric cultural holiday of Kwanzaa, the modern Pagan revival of Yule, why the day following Christmas is honored as Boxing Day, and the Seinfeld-based whimsical holiday of Festivus. Christmas Gifts from the Chanukah Crowd tells a history that is rich in tragedy and triumph, persistence and pathos, devastation and survival. It is a story about sameness and difference and the need to live with our differences. It is a story about what it means to be Christian, what it means to be Jewish, what it means to be American, and, perhaps most importantly, what it means to be human.

TELETUBBIES ON THE SCREEN AND BEHIND THE SCENES is a book that more than lives up to its title. Here is the entire story of Teletubbies. Denise Noe shows the reader the seeds that sprouted in the minds of Andrew Davenport, whose fascination with the space program led him to imagine overgrown space babies, and Anne Woods, whose response to watching Power Rangers kicking each other was to create characters who would hug instead of fight. Noe shows us how the dilemma of bringing the real world into the fantasized Teletubby world led to a solution of genuinely inspired creativity. Noe tells how performers took tiny bits of themselves into these wonderfully wacky characters as well as how cast and crew coped with difficulties imposed by oversized, bulky costumes and the occasional bout of turbulent weather. She takes us behind the scenes with a cast that included not only professional actors and actresses but "everyday" people who appeared on the famous "tummy screen films" in documentary-style episodes about their lives. Not all was sweetness and light in the making of this TV show. Noe shows the pain suffered when an actor playing a Teletubby found himself replaced. She also discusses the controversies that swirled around Teletubbies, going into depth about both the accusation that the show was a "dumbing down" of children's TV and the idea that the purple Teletubby, Tinky Winky, represented a gay man. This book is both a history and a celebration of Teletubbies."Denise Noe has worked hard and succeeded in putting together an excellent read for all Teletubbies fans." - Jane Lambert"A detailed insight into the world of Teletubbies. Right from how it all began up until the latest reboot, this book covers it all. Really see behind the smoke and mirrors and discover how these lovable characters come to life." - Neal Patel"Ms. Noe has written a wonderfully researched and insightful view of Teletubbies. The reader will learn a great deal about the behind the scenes work and activity that helped make Teletubbies such a beautifully unique show." - Rolf Saxon

Married . . . with Children premiered on Fox TV in 1987 and updated the Don Ameche and Frances Langford radio comedy series, The Bickersons, and Jackie Gleason's TV classic, The Honeymooners, with a raunchy, cutting-edge slant that focused on a lovable yet laughable family headed by endearingly flawed Al (Ed O'Neill), his housework-hating wife, sexy daughter, and randy son. For 11 seasons, the brilliant team of talent put the funk in dysfunctional.Rediscover the exhilarating humor and intellectual excitement in Denise Noe's first book. She delves behind-the-scenes with Michael Moye, Ron Leavitt, Ed O'Neill, Katey Sagal, Christina Applegate, David Faustino, David Garrison, Amanda Bearse, E. E. Bell, and Ritch Shydner. You'll be fascinated by the story of how two rogue writers created a deliberately off-the-wall program; how it almost got derailed before production began; how a controversy could have plucked the series off the air but ended up injecting a much needed shot in the arm; how a reality-based show occasionally--and courageously--ventured into comedy with a fantasy, horror, and/or science fiction spin.
