Although Jews were readmitted to England in 1661, nearly 200 years later there was an election for Chief Rabbi where the short list of candidates were all German. Today the community takes its British spiritual leadership for granted, but the whole structure had to be created from scratch; Jews' College has played a major part in this for over 150 years. This is the story of those who did the work and fought against the general indifference of a community that so often only paid lip service to the concept. There was also the struggle between lay leaders wanting ministers to be synagogue bureaucrats, and College Principals who wanted Talmudic scholars. The Principals prevailed, educating the bedrock of ministers who grew and nurtured congregations all over Britain and abroad. The achievements of men like Louis Loewe, Michael Friedlaender, Adolph Buechler, Isidore Epstein, Kopul Kahana, Hirsch Zimmels, Nahum Rabinovitch, Irving Jacobs and Jonathan Sacks deserve recognition. Their material sacrifice and intellectual rigour demanded total commitment from their students. This is their story, and the healthy state of the Jewish community in Britain today owes a great deal to their selfless efforts.

Chief Rabbi Joseph Herman Hertz (1872-1946), perhaps Britain's greatest Chief Rabbi, led his community through two World Wars and was instrumental in the rescue of Jewish refugees from Nazism. He published many books and edited the seminal Hertz Chumash. Rabbi Hertz was a founder of the Council of Christians and Jews. As well, he was the first Jew to be made a "Companion of Honour" and was the first Chief Rabbi to make a radio broadcast. Now available in paperback, this book recounts Rabbi Hertz's battles to maintain the Orthodox affiliation of his community and the authority of the Chief Rabbinate in Britain, against the powerful opposition of his own Honorary Officers at the United Synagogue. *** "This is an important book for understanding Rabbi Hertz and British Jewry in general. I learned a great deal about how the British experience both contrasts and mirrors the American experience. I recommend this book for all libraries..." -- AJL Reviews, February/March 2015 [Subject: Biography, History, Jewish Studies, Religious Studies]

For nearly fifty years Rabbi Dr. Solomon Schonfeld was a controversial figure in British Jewry, after he took over the fledgling Charedi Union of Hebrew Congregations from his late father in 1933. Against all the odds, this charismatic rabbi built up the foundations of the organization until it was equal to the other traditional Jewish power bases. He also saved many thousands of lives organizing the immigration of refugees from the Continent before and after the war. He transformed the attitude of the Jewish community in Britain towards Jewish education. His Jewish Secondary School Movement provided the proof that it was possible to combine an extensive curriculum in Jewish studies with a secular curriculum, rigorous enough to take a disproportionate percentage of the pupils to the best universities in the country and into the professions. These massive achievements were only attained by overcoming an enormous amount of opposition from the Jewish establishment, and persuading successive governments to bend the rules. They were achieved by a man who had the necessary combination of conviction and determination to overcome constant financial difficulties, obdurate and inflexible opponents and daunting personal problems. Many of the fascinating figures who dominated Anglo-Jewry over these years are presented in the book. The fiery Chief Rabbi, Joseph Hertz, Schonfeld's greatest supporter; the inspiring educationalist, Judith Grunfeld; the powerful and antagonistic head of the United Synagogue, Sir Robert Waley Cohen; Schonfeld supporters such as the impressario, Victor Hochhauser, the politician, Joe Lobenstein, a young refugee, who eventually became Lord Jakobovits. Schonfeld's victory against all the odds is a fascinating story and long overdue. Chaim Bermant, one of the great Jewish writers, once described Schonfeld as 'One of G-d's Cossacks'. The story that unfolds in the book is very often that dramatic.

He is persuaded that his stagecoach business has had its day but he doesn't like the heavy-handed, grabbing ways of the railroad company and is determined to hold out against the might of big business. When the going gets tough two footloose cowpokes, Jim Dawson and Brad Cook, are hired as shooters to protect him. But they are up against the brutal fixer hired by the Railroad, Daniel Blanche. Thrown into the mix is a whore-house floozy, under whose spell all three men fall. Murder, mayhem and betrayal follow. Is this all the future there can ever be for a town that already calls itself 'Nopoint'?

Over the centuries, arguments have raged over whether or not Britain should be welcoming toward immigrants. This is a book about a tiny proportion of the immigrants to whom Britain did grant asylum, refuge, and liberty. It is the first detailed examination into the survival and economic growth of the Jews in Britain. In Stuart times, the Jews amounted to a few hundred people. Today, there are still only 300,000 Jews in Britain. When they came to that country as impoverished immigrants, they had no jobs, little education, and could not speak English. And yet, some went on to run the biggest business empires in the country. Illustrated throughout, 'Thank You for Your Business' details the astonishing contribution Jews have made over the years to the British economy: how they sustained the currency through many wars; how they invented jigsaw puzzles and postcards; and the creation of such household names as Lyons, Glaxo, Burtons, Shell, ICI, Ladbrokes, and many more. The book examines the background of their founders to see what enabled them to spot opportunities that others missed, and how they overcame obstacles and succeeded where others failed. Over 350 firms are examined to describe the survival and economic growth of the Jews in Britain and to assess the contribution of their cultural and religious background to the success of these entrepreneurs.

July 2008 marks the 150th anniversary of the passing of the Oath Act which enabled Jews to become members of parliament without taking the Oath of Allegiance ""on the true faith of a Christian"". Lionel de Rothschild was the first to be allowed to swear on the Old Testament, using less contentious wording. Since that time there have been just over 200 Jewish MPs and to mark the anniversary Lord Janner and Derek Taylor are writing a history of their work and achievements. The book describes the background to the political scene and includes a short biography of each of the MPs. Among the many Jewish MPs of particular renown have been Rufus Isaacs, Herbert Samuel, Leslie Hore-Belisha, Manny Shinwell, Harold Lever, Keith Joseph, Leon Brittan, Nigel Lawson, Malcolm Rifkind and Michael Howard. There have, however, also been Jewish MPs who have won the VC., created the House of Commons Jazz Club and been famed for the quality of the catering they supervised in the House. There have also been three crooks. Jewish MPs have been responsible for the Aldermarston marches, the abolition of stage censorship and capital punishment, changes in the law on defamation and many other important pieces of legislation. They have created Shell and ICI. They have also supported all the Jewish institutions and given massvely to national and Jewish charities. The book illustrates how a small minority can play a full part in the service of their country while still retaining their own faith. In a multi-cultural society this is an important lesson.

The house of Don Pacifico, President of the Jewish community in Athens, was looted by a mob in April 1847. The riot was government-inspired and the courts were crooked. There was little chance of getting the large compensation Pacifico claimed - until Palmerston, the British Foreign Secretary, became involved in a totally justifiable piece of gunboat diplomacy. The author has unearthed a mass of information which finally shows Pacifico to be a victim of prejudice rather than a conman, and has shed new light on a fascinating episode of nineteenth-century European history.
