Where Did Everybody Go?: Why We're Lonely But Not Alone
Don Martin

cd
In the bestselling tradition of Mary Roach and A.J. Jacobs comes a fresh and powerful deep dive on loneliness, illuminating the complexity of this misunderstood social phenomenon and why people need people.According to a report by the US Surgeon General in 2023, one out of every two American adults are lonely. Author and podcaster Don Martin was one of them: in 2020, as the COVID pandemic raged and Don's once-vibrant social life was reduced to Zoom calls and Animal Crossing, he realized that lockdown did not create these feelings--they just amplified them until they could not be ignored. He wondered: how did we get here? What exactly is loneliness, anyway? How is it measured, and how is it useful to us as a species? Blending thorough research with humor and personal insight from his own experience, Don takes listeners on a loneliness deep dive, all the way from the conception of the term itself in the 1800s through the death of the American mall and rise of social media, which is too often blamed as the root cause of a centuries-old problem. Along the way, he talks to everyone from prominent researchers in the space to historians, city planners, and other writers and creatives working through this ever-evolving topic from unique angles. You'll learn about how loneliness affects different age groups and communities, the history and future of third places, the ways loneliness can deteriorate your physical health, and how everything from capitalism to the placement of garages in modern home construction ultimately impact our social bonds. Don leaves listeners with an action plan, sharing insights on how we can build a more connected future for ourselves and our neighbors. Fascinating, witty, and ultimately hopeful, Where Did Everybody Go? is perfect for fans of Mary Roach and Jennie Allen.
WELCOME TO FOXFIRE The rules here are simple: Don’t look in the trees. Don’t whistle in the woods at night. Don’t answer if you hear your name called. And remember . . . everything wants. Verity Vox is a witch-in-training who has never met a problem her spells can’t solve. But when a cryptic plea for help sends her to the forgotten coal mining town of Foxfire, she soon learns even magic has its limits. Verity discovers a curse was laid years ago by a traveling magician who vanished into the ancient Appalachian hills to seek greater power. Crops won’t grow. Bellies go hungry. Even treasured possessions fall apart. What’s worse, people have gone missing amidst rumors that they’ve sought out the magician who is lying in wait for those foolish or desperate enough to strike a deal with him. The witch must break the curse, find a missing girl, and solve the mystery of what’s really under the mountain before the town falls forever into the clutches of the monster lurking in the hills.

In his second collection, Don Martin creates an evocative collection of poetry that toes the line between what it means to be human and what it means to be divine. It is an expression of bemused disillusionment after growing up to find that adulthood is filled with people that are as equally lost as you. Yet, somehow, finding humor in the pain and ennui of that discovery. This follow-up collection to Martin's debut, The Playground, is for those that enjoy the magical realism of Neil Gaiman's American Gods or poetic voices such as Hal Sirowitz, Beau Sia, or Mary Karr.
This collection of poems explores the little voices within us all. The irreverent humor we dare not speak. The big questions we are too afraid to ask. The answers we are not sure we want. This debut by poet Don Martin explores the idea that inside every adult is a child that has never quite grown up.

It's one thing to come up with a good business idea, and quite another to marshal the people, money, and other resources entrepreneurs need to make the dream a successful reality. That's why most businesses fail within the first two years. The Entrepreneur's Guide to Successful Leadership helps budding moguls make it out of the toddler phase of entrepreneurship and into adolescence and adulthood with confidence. A concise and practical guide to leading smaller enterprises, the book is based on a proven, nine-step model of effective leadership developed by Dan Goldberg—the founder of the For Eyes optical chain—and entrepreneur and educator Don Martin. Step by step, readers learn what real leadership looks like and how to lead and grow the successful enterprise. Creating a vibrant business starts with understanding who you are, say the authors, and then coming up with a vision, mission, and strategy. That's the easy part. The hard part is to execute the strategy in line with your dreams, while using effective, ethical tactics to establish the business and prosper. Seasoned hands, the authors make that job easier, while helping entrepreneurs understand what makes employees tick and helping them become their productive best. The hard work not only gets easier, say the authors—it pays off as entrepreneurs watch their fledgling businesses take graceful flight. This book is a treasure chest that provides key insights and methods in the form of real-life stories, humor, strategies, techniques, exercises, checklists, templates, and other resources. Each illustrates in a unique way how good leaders achieve powerful results. Many books on leadership are gimmicky. The Entrepreneur's Guide to Successful Leadership focuses—in clear, simple, and direct terms—on the essential fundamentals, the blocking and tackling, required for business success.
