Censorship of the written word has proved a constant source for debate and argument. To cut or not to cut is a question with a long and fascinating history. First published in 1969, A Long Time Burning is an account of the political, religious, and moral censorship of literature, in the context of English literary history. It is principally concerned with the evolution of a modern pattern of censorship between the abolition of licensing in 1695 and the late Victorian period. The author outlines the motives and methods of censorship, illustrating these by more detailed discussion of such cases as those involving Edmund Curll, John Wilkes, Thomas Paine, William Hone, Richard Carlile, William Dugdale and Henry Vizetelly. The unofficial trade in banned books and the campaigns of the Proclamation Society; the Society for the Suppression of Vice, and the National Vigilance Association are described with the aid of some previously unpublished material. The book includes an anthology of illustrative material, quoting extracts from publications banned at various times and for various reasons. Pages from such books as Venus in the Cloister are reprinted for the first time in more than two centuries, while the other documents range from the Blasphemy Act of 1698 to a prosecution brought under the Race Relations Act of 1965.

Baxter McPherson is a child prodigy. He is able to use 99 percent of his brain capacity unlike normal people who only use 8 to 10 percent. He is anything but normal and he is the latest born into his family's history of exceptional children. Baxter just wants to be normal and live a typical life with friends and family who accept him with love and respect. But his friends chastise him and call him "Superman" because of his exceptional abilities. He just wants to play the "Clarke Kent" side of the Superman persona, but unlike Superman he does not have a Clarke Kent. His hope of being normal is constantly squashed by his own superlative abilities. In his youth, he is lonely. He wants to be accepted. He wants to understand why he is the way he is. His mother understands him as the latest prodigy in her family's history and consoles him guiding him to accept and appreciate his special abilities as he grows. As a young man at Harvard University, he finds love with his life's soulmate but realizes that a university education cannot teach him his life's purpose. He leaves, penniless to search out who he is. On his journeys he meets all classes of society: the rich and the poor; the good and the bad; the humble and the egocentric narcissists. Each new encounter embodies a philosophy in his soul: to find good people and to emphasize with them the best they can accomplish to benefit humanity. From his experiences, he forms the compassionate Butterfly Organization to reward goodness in society in all facets of humanity: regardless of scale from a small individual kid to large companies. But as surely as there is good in society, there is also evil--and evil is not a weak opponent. It is strong and it will not stand still. It reacts and counters against Baxter's organization of recruiting the best and brightest. A battle is inevitable and reaches into the tenets of his organization. It will take all of Baxter's resources to defeat the evil. Will he be successful?
The Lord Jesus Christ Is My Bridge Over Troubled Waters
The Lord Jesus Christ is My Bridge Over Troubled Waters is a follow-up to my first book entitled Donald Thomas, Man of Faith. The first book describes how the Lord took care of me during an attack on my life while I was in California in 1987. I was left for dead. I had broken jaws, blindness, paralysis, a caved-in chest, brain damage, and other life-threatening injuries. My first book tells how the Lord brought me through these harrowing times. The Lord Jesus Christ is My Bridge Over Troubled Waters focuses on how the Lord instilled in me at a young age the ability to help others, and it describes how the Lord has blessed me in many more ways. It tells of a happier occasion and encourages readers to never give up and to keep their faith in God.

How well--read are you? This literature quiz book will tell you. Some of those opening lines of great novels, plays, short stories and poems will be familiar, some are challenging and a few are for the most knowledgeable among us. See how well you do. Ideally, the beginning sentence of a literary work should draw the reader in and want him or her to continue on. Authors usually devote a great deal of time to this first sentence. Indeed, there is a story, probably myth, about a writer who spend twenty years rewriting the first sentence of his novel Oonald J. Thomas has spent 40 years teaching language and literature, in three languages, from elementary school through college. He currently teaches foreign language in college at SUNY Polytechnic Institute in Utica, NY.

For James Thomas Brudenell, 7th Earl of Cardigan, leading the Light Brigade at Balaclava was but one incident in a life of sensation and notoriety. Donald Thomas’s biography, originally published in 1977, and based on new material when originally published, shows this most controversial Victorian against a panorama of regimental intrigue and aristocratic luxury.Dismissed from the army for ‘revolting’ conduct, Cardigan bought the command of the 11th Hussars (the ‘Cherry Bums’) for £40,000 a few years later. Regimental rivalries led to the ‘Black Bottle’ scandal of 1840 and to a duel in which he shot a brother officer. Charged with attempted murder, Cardigan was the only Victorian peer to be tried by the House of Lords. Nonetheless, his seductions of other men’s wives rivalled his regimental misdemeanours in press reports. He was jeered int he streets, hissed at the theatre and burnt in effigy. It took the glory and the folly of Balaclava to turn ‘this plague-spot of the British army’ into ‘the most popular soldier in England’. Greeted everywhere by cheering crowds, their new hero fought duels and libel actions against those who denied his bravery before the Russian guns. For all his misbehaviour, Cardigan remains warm-blooded, generous, impulsive and courageous, as well as obstinate, proud and sometimes ridiculous. Hated by numerous men, and adored by many women, his elopement with the beautiful Adeline Horsey de Horsey was a triumph of his old age.

SystemVerilog is a Hardware Description Language that enables designers to work at the higher levels of logic design abstractions that match the increased complexity of current day integrated circuit and field-programmable gate array (FPGA) designs. The majority of the book assumes a basic background in logic design and software programming concepts. It is directed at: -students currently in an introductory logic design course that also teaches SystemVerilog, -designers who want to update their skills from Verilog or VHDL, and -students in VLSI design and advanced logic design courses that include verification as well as design topics. The book starts with a tutorial introduction on hardware description languages and simulation. It proceeds to the register-transfer design topics of combinational and finite state machine (FSM) design - these mirror the topics of introductory logic design courses. The book covers the design of FSM-datapath designs and their interfaces, including SystemVerilog interfaces. Then it covers the more advanced topics of writing testbenches including using assertions and functional coverage. A comprehensive index provides easy access to the book's topics. The goal of the book is to introduce the broad spectrum of features in the language in a way that complements introductory and advanced logic design and verification courses, and then provides a basis for further learning.Solutions to problems at the end of chapters, and text copies of the SystemVerilog examples are available from the author as described in the Preface.

'Donald Thomas introduces us to the slums and fetid courtyards of nineteenth-century London and in doing so provides a sweeping portrait of the vast world that did not accept "Victorian Values". The villainy is outstanding. It is also entertaining. The author has a practised eye for the best anecdotes and presents amazing characters, some of whom come equipped with names that sound positively Dickensian . . . a wonderful profile of Victorian London' The Spectator

It amused her to have an admirer who was far too timid to approach. On that evening, she had been tempted to give him a fright, to swing round and confront him. The sensational events of the summer of 1907 - the disappearance of the Ascot Gold Cup from the Royal Enclosure, and the even more astonishing theft of the Irish Crown Jewels from a locked and guarded strongroom in Dublin Castle - remain mysterious but apparently random events. Only one man knows their secret. Captain Richard Gaudeans, cashiered officer, conman and cracksman, cuts a more appropriate figure among the fairground booths where he earns his living than the corridors of power. But the course of the year takes him into both. And in both he uses his skill and cunning to outmanoeuvre everyone in his path.
