How to conduct business profitably in the new era of reshoring and economic nationalism First published in 2005, The Black Book of Outsourcing quickly became a definitive guide for businesses navigating the complexities of offshore outsourcing, offering strategies and insights that shaped corporate decision-making during the height of globalization. Now, 20 years later, the world has changed dramatically. The Black Book of Reshoring: The Essential Guide to America's New Manufacturing Boom delivers key insights into how the global economic landscape has shifted, showing how the once-unquestioned dominance of offshore outsourcing has given way to a new era of reshoring and economic nationalism. This book includes information on tariffs, supply chain vulnerabilities, and the COVID-19 pandemic, which have exposed the flaws in globalization’s model, leading to a reversal in course as businesses and governments prioritize domestic production, resilience, and sovereignty. This book offers: Practical frameworks and strategies for businesses considering reshoring, including insights on technology, workforce development, and supply chain resilience Case studies from leading companies like Tesla, GE, and Pfizer, illustrating the challenges and opportunities of reshoring in industries such as semiconductors, EVs, pharmaceuticals, and consumer goods A forward-looking perspective on the future of trade, globalization, and economic sovereignty The Black Book of Reshoring is an essential read for all business professionals seeking up-to-date information on trends, strategies, economic impacts, and best practices in reshoring and homeshoring.

Towards a Radical Democracy (Routledge Revivals)
Originally published in 1988, this is the first systematic account of the writings of Hungarian dissidents and former students of George Lukacs, collectively known as the 'Budapest School'. Dr. Brown demonstrates the importance of their work in contributing to a logically consistent yet realistic theory of socialist mixed economies, and genuine radical democracies. The Budapest Schoool's model of radical democracy represents a critique of both industrial capitalism and existing socialist systems, with immediate political as well as philosophical importance. Dr. Brown is particularly concerned to draw out its significance for the practical realities of political economy, and the logical implications for desirable reform of Western mixed economies.

If Hitler Comes

If Hitler Comes

Christopher Serpell; Douglas Brown

Faber Faber
2009
pokkari
This novel was first published by Faber in August 1940 under the title, The Loss of Eden. It was then reissued by the British Publishers Guild (a wartime cooperative venture), in March 1941, with the more arresting and overt title, If Hitler Comes: A Cautionary Tale. It was a work of speculative fiction with a moral purpose. It was a counterblast to the waverers, to those of a defeatist mien who could convince themselves an arrangement between Great Britain and Nazi Germany wouldn't be such a bad thing after all. The original Faber book description asks, 'What would it be like in England, if, after a premature peace on plausibly equal terms, we found that this ''peace'' had merely delivered us completely into Hitler's hands?' It continues, 'The imaginary New Zealand journalist, writing retrospectively as an eye-witness from the security of the Antipodes, tell us what happened - or rather what might have happened. And so precise and logical does he make the narrative, so real the characters, so vivid the scenes, that in reading we are almost persuaded that it did happen. Then we say: ''Nothing could be worse than that!''In their foreword and dedication, the authors, Douglas Brown and Christopher Serpell, write:'This is no fanciful picture. It is painted from life, with England as the background instead of Bohemia or Poland or any other country now under the Nazi heel. It is not intended to cause despondency or alarm, but to confirm and justify that resolution with which we are now fighting. If such a tale is to have a dedication it can only be to:THOSE WILL NOT LET THIS HAPPEN''It is a work of fiction, but the authors write so convincingly and have so keenly observed recent events and the men who have helped to fashion them that their narrative reads like a true historical picture of England with Hitler and the Nazis in control. This remarkable book should be widely read, not merely as an awful warning, but also because it is so movingly and skilfully written.' Education 'The events it describes are so appallingly life-like that I found it difficult to remember that I was only reading a 'novel' . . . If the Ministry of Information want to attack defeatism, they should distribute free copies throughout Whitehall and the country houses of England.' New Statesman and Nation

Market Rules

Market Rules

Douglas Brown

McGill-Queen's University Press
2003
nidottu
Brown argues that internal barriers to trade and competition in these countries were significant obstacles to competition in the global economy and shows that the old market rules were rooted in longstanding political and regional compromises. He describes the process of detailed and difficult intergovernmental collaboration required for the EU, and now Canada and Australia, to produce new market rules. The resulting reforms created new regimes that provide deeper and broader national economic integration in Canada and Australia than in the EU. The new rules entrench neo-liberal values, retaining some room for diversity and flexibility for equity goals. Built on a careful analysis of the differences and similarities in political economy, constitutional design, federal culture, and history of intergovernmental relations in Canada and Australia, Market Rules provides fresh evidence that federal states can be strong and autonomous in the global society, while underscoring the conditions for effective collaboration that make this sustainable. Rich in detail, broad in scope, Market Rules makes a significant contribution to knowledge about federalism and economic policy-making in the era of globalization.
