Presents new scholarship, images, and primary sources that explore the art and legacy of a critical yet under-recognized figure in Abstract Expressionism and twentieth-century American art."The gentleman Abstract Expressionist," in the words of poet John Ashbery, Bradley Walker Tomlin was known for his elegance in both painting style and personal comportment. The book includes over forty paintings, works on paper, and printed materials, charting Tomlin's development from art nouveau illustrations of the 1920s to large-scale Abstract Expressionist paintings of the 1950s. The exhibition explores his formative years in Syracuse, early patronage by Condé Nast, and the important role played by the Woodstock art colony. Tomlin is best known as a key figure in the New York School and had close friendships with Adolph Gottlieb, Philip Guston, and Robert Motherwell. Unlike most of his peers, Tomlin focused on the impersonal possibilities of art. His carefully orchestrated paintings resonate with our time's renewed interest in abstraction and design.

The first major publication on the quiet, contemplative and minimalist paintings of Johnnie Winona Ross Johnnie Winona Ross's quiet, contemplative and painstakingly produced paintings have created a stir in the contemporary art world. Often compared with Agnes Martin for both his Minimalist sensibility and his connection to New Mexico, Ross's reputation has grown swiftly in recent years. The paintings are reductive, but evidently process-oriented in their layering. Ross begins by pouring thin rivulets of paint down tilted canvases with the streams of paint branching out as they flow towards the bottom to create organic forms. He then scrapes away most of the pigment, leaving faint traces of color, so that sometimes as many as 30 sanded and repainted layers will accrue. Ross's paintings convey a spacious and tranquil palette grounded in these highly worked surfaces. This first major publication on Ross's work also features an essay by Carter Ratcliff.

Helen Frankenthaler’s (1928–2011) radical approach to paint and material creates images pulsating with colour. During the postwar period in the United States, she was a leading figure in abstract art. This volume brings together nearly fifty works, providing a comprehensive overview of the world’s largest private collection of Helen Frankenthaler’s works – on display at the recently opened Museum Reinhard Ernst in Wiesbaden. In Frankenthaler’s works, paint and canvas become one. The soak-stain technique she developed allows the paint to seep directly into unprimed fabric. The result is a pictorial effect like no other: colour spaces open up, flowing into one another, sometimes saturated, sometimes transparent. Above all, the pictures show an artist willing to take risks: by setting no limits to her artistic work, Frankenthaler was able to create liberated, large-scale paintings full of radiance. Her groundbreaking body of work remains highly relevant today.
Imperfections By Chance: Paul Feeley Retrospective, 1954-1966
Paul Feeley (19101966) is a towering figure in postwar American modernism. His legendary tenure as head of the art department at Bennington College and resulting associations with the likes of Lawrence Alloway, Helen Frankenthaler, Clement Greenberg, Jackson Pollock, and David Smith informed his unique approach to painting as an open-ended proposition. Represented during his lifetime by the Betty Parsons Gallery and honored posthumously by a retrospective at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, he is the subject of this timely new publication, which accompanies a major exhibition organized by the Albright- Knox Art Gallery and the Columbus Museum of Art.In addition to color plates of all works in the exhibitionnearly one hundred paintings, works on paper, and sculpturesthis volume features essays by exhibition curators Douglas Dreishpoon and Tyler Cann, as well as poet and critic Raphael Rubinstein, and an illustrated chronology by academic and granddaughter of the artist Cary Cordova. From his early Abstract Expressionistinspired paintings to his organic, anthropomorphic figureground compositions and later diagrammatical, hard-edged works, "Imperfections by Chance" charts the full range of Feeley s influential life and career. The accompanying exhibition opens at The Columbus Museum of Art, Columbus, OH, October 22, 2015January 10, 2016"
