Die Erfahrungen im pharmakognostischen Hochschul- unterricht haben gezeigt, daB neben den vorhandenen umfangreichen Lehrbuchern der Pharmakognosie, die dem Studenten oft nur schwer zuganglich sind, eine kurzgefaBte Darstellung des so stark angewachsenen Kapitels der biogenen Arzneimittel fehlt. Mit dem vor- liegenden wissenschaftlichen Taschenbuch soli versucht werden, diese Lucke zu schlieBen und dem Pharmazie- studenten oder dem an der Biochemie der Pflanzen interessierten Biologiestudenten eine Einfiihrung in das Fachgebiet zu geben. Dariiber hinaus mochte es allen an arzneilich verwendeten Pflanzen oder Tieren und deren Inhaltsstoffen Interessierten, besonders dem in der Praxis tatigen Pharmazeuten, in konzentrierter Form einen Oberblick uber den neuesten Stand der Erkennt- nisse auf dem sich sturmisch entwickelnden Gebiet der Pharmakognosie vermitteln, die Voraussetzung zum Verstandnis der modernen pharmakognostischen und phytochemischen Publikationen schaffen sowie zur wei- teren Beschaftigung mit dieser interessanten pharmazeu- tischen Disziplin anregen. Aus didaktischen Grunden wurde eine moglichst straffe, systematische Gliederung des gebotenen Stoffes angestrebt. Dabei sind entsprechend dem Charakter der Pharmakognosie als "Pharmazeutische Biologie" be- sonders biologisch-biochemische Gesichtspunkte beruck- sichtigt worden. Wegen der gebotenen Kurze muBte eine strenge Stoffauswahl getroffen werden. Wenn bei vielen Drogen stichpunktartig auf Nebenwirkstoffe und Begleitstoffe hingewiesen wurde, so geschah das nicht Vorwort IX in der Absieht, Vollstiindigkeit zu crreichen, t;ondern lim eine Simplifizierllng zu vermeiden und die KOlllplcxi- tat des Ensembles del' Inhaltsst, offe von pflanzlichen lind tierisehen Arzneimitteln aufzuzeigen.
