Why somebody kill that man?The mysterious death of a popular figure at a Caribbean resort has inspector Johnny Cliff wondering why someone might want him dead. He didn't seem to have any enemies, but there's no question it was murder. The resort wants the case solved but they aren't too interested in having the police investigate. That's bad for business. All this confusion and Johnny still has to solve the case of Henderson's dog disappearing. It's busy times on the island.
Summer heat and sadness. The chain motels perch all along the US highways and freeways and cluster where they intersect, nestled among convenience stores and gas stations. Convenient, soulless, and relatively inexpensive, they provide a place to rest for a time, take a respite from a journey. They also house meetings, celebrations, and assignations. Inside their homogenous rooms, through their economical walls, you can sometimes hear life's dramas play out. Many stories end there as the faceless and anonymous nature of chain motels, their very convenience, makes them almost perfect for the tragic endings that come. This is the story of several such endings, stories that take on their own power and strength and become inevitable. They overwhelm actual desire, playing out no matter what outcome we truly want.
Who is Wyatt Osgood? In Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged, Galt's Gulch was a physical place where the best minds could retreat--withdraw their skills and support from a corrupt system. Today, distributed ledger technologies such as Bitcoin, allow anyone to "Go Galt" when, where, and how they choose. There's no need for a utopian land to escape to. And what happens if the movers and shakers, the ones who create the technology, the ones who implement it, decide to use it for their own ends? What if they make their transactions invisible? What if they choose their location, their profession, the people they work with based on shared values and merit without any concern for government sanctions or rules? The fight for freedom takes on a new form and its main battles are fought in a digital arena, with the freedom fighters asserting their right to privacy while governments and international organizations are left trying to find ways to control transactions that are all but invisible. Featuring a foreword by Adam Kokesh.
Ideas can be powerful...and dangerousWhen the CIA sends a financial analyst named Tyler Blake to go undercover at the Anarchapulco conference in Mexico, the idea is to have eyes and ears on anarchist plots. Somehow things don't go as planned. Despite good intentions, the ideas of freedom he's exposed to might just be too contagious to resist.
Tropical heat, money and lustHenry Miller once said, "One's destination is never a place, but always a new way of seeing things." When a programmer on an extended vacation in Cartagena, Colombia, lets a rich and chatty American expat tell his story, it wasn't interesting or particularly impressive. But, when he meets the man's beautiful assistant and hears rumors that the man has a dark secret and has protection, he is intrigued and begins to think of ways to bring him down, to stop him. This story of high-tech vigilante justice was inspired by a steamy tropical, South American atmosphere, cold drinks, and lithe, sweaty bodies. It's the story of how, ultimately, a man reacts to the temptation to deliver justice and satisfy his own desires (to possess both the tangible and intangible), and in the process, overcoming common sense and perhaps whatever common decency he once had.But then, betrayal for a worthy cause can taste mighty sweet even if its never quite clear, at the end, who seduced whom you can still have a happy ending.
"A man oughta be able to walk home drunk without some damn fool running him off the road, you know."The hub of life in the islands is the local rum shop and though living in the Windward Islands in the Caribbean might be a little different than other places, maybe move at a slower place, the problems of life are pretty much the same as anywhere else. Still, it's a different kind of world. This is a collection of stories and poems about that world, with art by Dagny.
The partly true story of a passionate sailor and corporate executive -- a real "Flying Dutchman" who struggled to escape the Hong Kong corporate treadmill, and finally broke free of the world's tightest golden handcuffs to follow his bliss, sailing the ocean.Harper John (aka John Michael Pocock) wrote the song that inspired this story which provides a glimpse of a man living his dream. Our old colleague and good friend in Hong Kong, Tom Tsui, provided the interior photographs that beautifully illustrate the story.
