Los crímenes de la calle Morgue/The murders in the Rue Morgue: Edición bilingüe/Bilingual edition
The story surrounds the baffling double murder of Madame L'Espanaye and her daughter in the Rue Morgue, a fictional street in Paris. Newspaper accounts of the murder reveal that the mother's throat is so badly cut that her head is barely attached and the daughter, after being strangled, has been stuffed into the chimney. The murder occurs in an inaccessible room on the fourth floor locked from the inside. Neighbors who hear the murder give contradictory accounts, each claiming that he heard the murderer speaking a different language. The speech was unclear, the witnesses say and they admit to not knowing the language they are claiming to have heard.

A new selection for the NEA's Big Read program A compact selection of Poe's greatest stories and poems, chosen by the National Endowment for the Arts for their Big Read program. This selection of eleven stories and seven poems contains such famously chilling masterpieces of the storyteller's art as "The Tell-tale Heart," "The Fall of the House of Usher," "The Cask of Amontillado," and "The Pit and the Pendulum," and such unforgettable poems as "The Raven," "The Bells," and "Annabel Lee." Poe is widely credited with pioneering the detective story, represented here by "The Purloined Letter," "The Mystery of Marie Roget," and "The Murders in the Rue Morgue." Also included is his essay "The Philosophy of Composition," in which he lays out his theory of how good writers write, describing how he constructed "The Raven" as an example.

'Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary, Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore— While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping, As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door.' Uncanny and strange, Poe's writing defied convention, shocked readers, and confounded critics. This selection of his poetry and short stories demonstrates the astonishing power and imagination with which Poe probed the darkest corners of the human mind. The title narrative poem, maybe Poe's most famous work, follows a man's terrifying descent into madness after the loss of a lover, when he receives an unexpected visitor one bleak December night.

Unique collection of short stories Presented as “A Sequel to ‘The Murders in the Rue Morgue’”, ‘The Mystery of Marie Rogêt’ was inspired by the murder of a well-known New York beauty, whose body was found in the Hudson River on 28th July 1841. Just like its predecessor, this story – which also features C. Auguste Dupin, the French detective who solved the Rue Morgue case – is one of the earliest examples of the real-crime murder mystery, and is justly regarded as one of the highest points of the entire genre. Alongside ‘Marie Rogêt’, this volume, which completes Alma’s edition of Edgar Allan Poe’s fiction works, includes a wide variety of tales, spanning from his very early beginnings as a writer, with light-hearted skits such as ‘The Duc de l’Omelette’ and ‘Bon-Bon’, to rollicking adventure stories, fables, dialogues between spirits and parodies such as ‘Mellonta Tauta’ and ‘X-ing a Paragrab’, which he penned only a few months before his premature death in 1849. Taken together, they consolidate Poe’s reputation as one of the greatest and most eclectic storytellers of all time.
