This book examines women’s relationship to the Virgin Mary in two different cultural and religious contexts, and compares how these relationships have been analyzed and explained on a theological and a sociological level. The figure of the Virgin Mary is a divisive one in our modern culture. To some, she appears to be a symbol of religious oppression, while to others, she is a constant comfort and even an inspiration towards empowerment.Drawing on the author’s own ethnographic research among Catholic Costa Rican women and Orthodox Finnish women, this study relates their experiences with Mary to the folklore and popular religion materials present in each culture. The book combines not only different social and religious frameworks but also takes a critical look at ways in which feminists have (mis)interpreted the meaning of Mary for women. It therefore combines theological and ethnographic methods in order to create a feminist Marian theology that is particularly attentive to women’s lived religious practices and theological thinking.This study provides a unique ethnographically informed insight into women’s religious interactions with Mary. As such, it will be of great interest to those researching in religious studies and theology, gender studies, Latin American studies, anthropology of religion, and folklore studies.

Mikä on kehityksen ja uskonnon suhde? Mitä kehitys tarkoittaa uskonnon näkökulmasta ja mitä uskonnollistaustaiset kehitysyhteistyöjärjestöt tekevät? Uskonnontutkimuksessa kehitykseen liittyviä kysymyksiä on taas usein tarkasteltu kapeasti. Tieteenalojen välisen vuoropuhelun puuttuminen ja kehitystutkimuksessa vallinnut uskontosokeus tai asenteellinen suhtautuminen uskontoon ovat puolestaan vaikuttaneet siihen, että uskonnon ja kehityksen välistä monitahoista suhdetta on tarkasteltu puutteellisesti.Kirjassa tarkastellaan uskonnon monimuotoista suhdetta kehitykseen teoreettisesti ja käytännöllisesti muun muassa näiden kysymysten kautta. Teos luo uutta, rohkeaa ja kriittistä vuoropuhelua sukupuolentutkimuksen ja uskonnontutkimuksen välille. Se esittelee alan kansainvälistä tutkimusta ja aihepiiristä käytävää keskustelua, jossa uskonnontutkijat haastavat sukupuolentutkimuksen ja feministisen teorian oletuksia uskonnon ja sukupuolen suhteesta. Keskeisiä teemoja ovat muun muassa intersektionaalisuus, ekofeminismi, maskuliinisuus, queer-teoria, toimijuus ja valta. Teos sopii yliopistolliseksi oppikirjaksi, mutta tarjoaa ajankohtaisia näkökulmia kaikille uskonnon ja sukupuolen kysymyksistä kiinnostuneille.

How far are the real lives of millions of poor women really catered for in liberation and feminist theologies? Vuola argues here that traditional liberation theology's notion of praxis (as in L .Boff and E. Dussel) is limited by its essentialist notion of 'poor' and its neglect of the issue of poor women's reproductive rights. Classical feminist theologies, on the other hand, are fraught with their own essentialist notions ('women's experience'). Both discourses are inadequate to deal with poor women's suffering: widespread maternal mortality, high rates of botched, illegal abortions, and an overall lack of reproductive rights. As a response to this lack, Vuola nurtures a form of Latin American feminist liberation theology that addresses directly the suffering and death of these millions of women.
