English summary: As a consequence of the Reformation, the professors at Protestant universities held marriage as a new and ideal arrival, and by embracing it they strove to present the professoriate as a confessional group. At the same time, the involvement of families in public university celebrations also helped them to establish their academic position as a socially privileged and exclusive one. In the Age of the Enlightenment, however, a new image of the academic developed, for which the rediscovered idea of the single academic was again a central concept. "The Scholar in the House" investigates the dynamic relationship between university and family life with regards to the functions which they both fulfilled, using the University of Helmstedt as an example. Therefore, the thesis presented in this work states that the subjects of marriage, family, and household were central to how university professors saw themselves and others. This book offers a deep insight into the domestic arrangements, the social interaction with marriage and sexuality as well as the issue of self-representation in text and image. In addition to the archival collection of the University of Helmstedt, this study also examines funeral sermons, burial programs, and advice-literature.
