First Published in 1995. This innovative series is an ideal means of supporting professional practice in the post-Dearing era, when a new focus on the quality of teaching and learning is possible. The series promotes reflective teaching and active forms of pupil learning. The books explore the implications of these commitments for curriculum and curriculum-related issues. This book has emerged out of the collective experience of six colleagues who work together at the Faculty of Education of the University of the West of England, in Bristol. The twin strands here are a social constructivist model of learning and a reflective teaching model of pedagogy. Through reflecting on our experiences and evaluating their intentions, practices and outcomes, not only do we learn, but we also enrich the learning of those children, pupils and students with whom we are working.

Baptists have at times been tempted to dismiss liturgy as formulaic. Simply going through the motions or saying set phrases, they have rightly argued, does not necessarily lead to faithfulness. A disconnect between liturgical assemblies and lives of faithfulness, however, does not mean that all liturgy is merely rote. It means, rather, that false idolatrous liturgies have captured our imaginations. In fact, the very idea that liturgy pertains to a sphere separate from the rest of life is itself already a distorted liturgical conviction that is even now disfiguring the body of Christ. Living the Liturgy argues that there is no sphere of life—political, economic, or otherwise—that is not already liturgical. So understood, liturgies inevitably form our understandings of nature, freedom, time, and much else. The key question is, "Which liturgy is in fact shaping our lives?" Elizabeth Newman argues that Baptists can expand their liturgical and theological vision by locating themselves more fully within the whole church: one, holy, catholic, and apostolic.Far from entailing a loss of Baptist identity, genuine ecumenism enhances Christian self-understanding, whatever one's tradition. Ecumenism is an exchange of gifts. A faithful gift exchange—whether giving or receiving—builds communion, illuminating rather that obfuscating Baptist and other Christian identities, enabling us to live and witness more fully for the life of the world. Living the Liturgy displays in particular ways and through specific examples how an ecumenically informed understanding of liturgy can cultivate an enriched Baptist self-understanding and witness in a late modern context.

Christian hospitality is more than a well-set table, pleasant conversation, or even inviting people into your home. Christian hospitality, according to Elizabeth Newman, is an extension of how we interact with God. It trains us to be capable of welcoming strangers who will challenge us and enhance our lives in unexpected ways, readying us to embrace the ultimate stranger: God.In Untamed Hospitality, Newman dispels the modern myths of hospitality as a superficial commodity that can be bought and sold at The Pottery Barn and restores it to its proper place within God's story, as displayed most fully in Jesus Christ. Worship, she says, is the believer's participation in divine hospitality, a hospitality that cannot be sequestered from our economic, political, or public lives. This in-depth study of true hospitality will be of interest to professors, students, and scholars looking for a fresh take on a timeless subject.
