Ellen Glasgow's fourth novel, ""The Battle-ground"", was her first best-seller and presented a meditation on the South from the decade before the Confederacy to the middle of the 20th century. The book departed from the tradition of Southern romances, and has been praised for its historical accuracy.
Opening in the years just before the First World War, and set in the Valley of Virginia, this novel traces the experience of a family with four generations of women.
This novel deals with the tragedy of old age. It develops the theme in the context of Richmond society during the 20s. The male protagonist, a judge of 65, marries an impulsive 23-year-old woman. His views on women, allied to his being at a ""dangerous age"", are set against women's views of men.
