The Conscript; A Story of the French war of 1813 "", has been considered a very important part of the human history, but is currently not available in printed formats. Hence so that this work is never forgotten we have made efforts in its preservation by republishing this book in a modern format so that it is never forgotten and always remembered by the present and future generations. These books are not made of scanned copies of their original work and hence the text is clear and readable. This whole book has been reformatted, retyped and designed.

Peu de lecteurs connaissent encore Erckmann-Chatrian. Apprecies de George Sand et d'Alphonse de Lamartine, defendus par Victor Hugo, ils ont subi le sort des auteurs edites par Hetzel: designes comme des ecrivains regionalistes s'adressant uniquement a la jeunesse, ils sont passes de mode. Apres avoir paru dans la Bibliotheque verte et sous forme d'extraits dans les manuels scolaires, leurs romans ont ete oublies. Pourtant, Emile Erckmann (1822-1899) et Alexandre Chatrian (1826-1890), auteurs lorrains, figurent parmi les ecrivains les plus lus du XIXe siecle. Avec pour cadre la vie quotidienne d'une campagne reculee, celle des environs de Phalsbourg puis des petits villages de Lorraine et des Vosges, leurs ecrits abondent de menus faits recueillis aupres des villageois. Mais ce realisme alors en vogue s'y trouve nettement inflechi par un idealisme volontaire voire optimiste: Il faut que tout soit un peu idealiste, car la realite plate, telle qu'on la comprend et qu'on la pratique aujourd'hui est trop assommante confie Erckmann. Leur prose s'en trouve enrichie a la fois de considerations metaphysiques, du recours a l'etrange et au fantastique mais aussi d'un didactisme republicain. Leur devise pourrait etre edifier et instruire . La presente edition annotee de leurs oeuvres comprend trois recueils de contes - Contes fantastiques (1860), Contes de la montagne (1860) et Contes des bords du Rhin (1862) - et trois romans - L'Ami Fritz (1864), Histoire d'un conscrit de 1813 (1864), Waterloo (1865). Elle reprend la premiere edition de chaque oeuvre en volume et est accompagnee d'une introduction generale, de notices pour chaque partition, de notes explicatives, d'un dictionnaire des personnages, d'une bibliographie, d'une chronologie et d'index.

The Conscript: A Story Of The French War Of 1813 (Translated From The French Of Erckmann-Chatrian) This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs.
