This luxurious hardback edition brings together four classic essays on Stoic philosophy from the Ancient Greek world, beautifully presented with gold embossing and stenciled page edges. Is there an answer to the question 'How does one lead a happy life' Certainly one ancient Greek school of philosophy believed that there was: lead a life of virtue, one in harmony with nature and do not be swayed by fortune or misfortune. First propounded by Zeno of Citium, Stoicism has resonated through the ages and, today, it seems even more pertinent as we look for ways to combat the constant bombardment of our lives by outside forces, whether they be the effects of current affairs, our work, family issues, economic problems or social pressures. Collected together in this volume are four key works that explain the key tenets of Stoicism, each one offering mindful lessons about how to face both the best and the worst things and find your path through life. Contains: - On the Shortness of Life by Seneca- Of Peace of Mind by Seneca- The Enchridion of Epictetus by Epictetus- Meditations by Marcus Aurelius. This deluxe edition features gold foil cover embossing, stencilled page-edges and full-color endpapers, making a true collector's item. Also included is an introduction that explores the tenets of Stoicism and explains how crucial these works are to understanding this school of philosophical thought.

Principal Doctrines & Letter to Menoeceus by Epicurus and translated by Robert Drew Hicks. Epicurus was an ancient Greek philosopher who founded a school of philosophy now called Epicureanism. Only a few fragments and letters of Epicurus's 300 written works remain. Much of what is known about Epicurean philosophy derives from later followers and commentators. The "Principal Doctrines", also known as the "Sovran Maxims", are a collection of forty quotes from the writings of Epicurus that summarize his ethical theory. The "Letter to Menoeceus" summarizes his ethical doctrines. 'Let no one be slow to seek wisdom when he is young nor weary in the search thereof when he is grown old. For no age is too early or too late for the health of the soul. And to say that the season for studying philosophy has not yet come, or that it is past and gone, is like saying that the season for happiness is not yet or that it is now no more.'

Epicurus developed a system of ethics embracing every conception or form of life that can be traced to the principles of his philosophy. Notably Epicurus's ethic of pleasure is the exact opposite of the Stoic's ethic of duty. The consequences, however, are the same: in the end, the Epicurean is asked to live with the same temperance and justice as the Stoic. The Principal Doctrines developed by Epicurus are one of the few surviving documents. This surviving original text is presented here.Epicurus was an ancient Greek philosopher as well as the founder of the school of philosophy called Epicureanism. Only a small selection of his written work survived to present day. Surviving texts include The Principle Doctrines and his letters.
Essential Epicurus (Large Print)
For Epicurus, the purpose of philosophy was to attain the happy, tranquil life, characterized by peace and freedom from fear, the absence of pain, and by living a self-sufficient life surrounded by friends. He taught that pleasure and pain are the measures of what is good and evil; death is the end of both body and soul and should therefore not be feared; the gods neither reward nor punish humans; the universe is infinite and eternal; and events in the world are ultimately based on the motions and interactions of atoms. Although much of Epicurus' written work has been lost, the remaining principle doctrines and his letters featured in this book provide an insight into the Epicurean school of thought, which was originally based in the garden of his house and thus called The Garden. Epicurus's Morals Translated from the Greek by John Digby, Esq
The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars. The Age of Enlightenment profoundly enriched religious and philosophical understanding and continues to influence present-day thinking. Works collected here include masterpieces by David Hume, Immanuel Kant, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, as well as religious sermons and moral debates on the issues of the day, such as the slave trade. The Age of Reason saw conflict between Protestantism and Catholicism transformed into one between faith and logic -- a debate that continues in the twenty-first century.++++The below data was compiled from various identification fields in the bibliographic record of this title.
