Kotozuka Eiichi 琴塚 英一 (1906-1979), born in Osaka, graduated from the Kyoto Kaiga Semmon Gakko (Technical School of Painting) in 1930. From 1932, he exhibited prints with Shun'yokai (Spring Principle Association), an artist's organization that exhibited Western-style art. He also exhibited with the government sponsored Teiten. He was a member of Nihon Hanga Kyokai (Japan Print Association) from 1938. In addition to print making, Kotozuka exhibited Japanese-style paintings with the artists' organization Seiryusha, which he helped found in 1929. He was also a co-founder of Koryokusha in 1948 with fellow artists Tokuriki Tomikichirō (1902-2000), Kamei Tōbei (1901-1977) and Takahashi Tasaburō (1904-1977) which they set up to publish their creative prints (sosaku hanga). After WWII he created a number of designs for the publisher Uchida Publishing, including his most famous series Eight Snow Scenes of Kyoto.Other series created by the artist include Scenes from Four Historical Cities; Scenes from Shiga, Nara and Kyoto; and Four Scenes from Kyoto. He also participated in the design of the series Fifty Kinds of Flowers (Hana gojū dai no uchi) with Kamei Tōbei and Tokuriki Tomikichirō and Twenty-Four Views In and Out of Kyoto with Kamei Tōbei
The Russo-Japanese War (8 February 1904 - 5 September 1905) was a conflict between the Russian Empire and the Empire of Japan primarily over influence in Korea. After more than 19 months of almost unbroken successes by Japanese land and naval forces with the Russian loss of its Far East and its Baltic Fleets and loss of Port Arthur and Mukden - the capital of Manchuria, the two sides agreed to a peace treaty 5 September 1905, the Treaty of Portsmouth, brokered by the President of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt. The war was perceived in many quarters as a war between the "Yellow Peril" and White Christianity with the hopes or fears of the Asian masses directed by the Japanese. However, the Treaty of Portsmouth was viewed by many ordinary Japanese as cheating Japan of its victory and rightful spoils of war - the ordinary Japanese were much more belligerent than the leadership - and this would later lead to the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937 - 1945) and the Pacific War (1941 - 1945).The woodblock prints depicting this war fall between the great masters Hiroshige and Hokusai and others at the end of the Tokugawa Period and those of the Shin hanga - new print period and thereby cast important light on the artistic development of woodblock printing in Meiji Japan and thus complement the authors previous books. They are war prints, nishiki-e, a new and special category of ukiyo-e prints that really started with the First Sino-Japanese War, see authors book on this conflict with a selection of these prints. The prints are important documentation of this military conflict and of how the Japanese artists viewed it, how they presented it to the public. Due to the development of newspapers and photography there are less prints than from the first Sino-Japanese War (1894 - 1859).The prints are by a diverse number of artists with different styles. Some of these artists appear only to have been active during the conflict while others were already either established painters or print artists.Others would later appear in the shin-hanga movement, creating wonderful prints of landscapes, beauties - bijin-ga, actors, birds and flower prints or sumo prints. The reader is referred to authors books on these artists. The authors hope the reader will enjoy the selection of artists and their works and thank readers for their support.
Emanuel Aage Petersen (born Aage Emanuel Petersen on February 18, 1894 in Copenhagen; died December 27, 1948 in Farum). He was a Danish painter, best known for his Greenlandic motifs. In 1921 he was in Greenland. Enthusiastic about the island, he returned to Greenland every year from 1923 to 1926. From 1928 to 1930 he undertook an art expedition, which was financed by Gr nlands Styrelse and the Danish state. The depiction of Greenland became his life's purpose. He created between 2000 and 3000 paintings in the course of his life. His depictions of the country's nature were initially characterized by very detailed porcelain painting, but later he began to paint in a more stylized manner.Emanuel Aage Petersen paid particular attention to the play of colors and the depiction of weather conditions, and he always painted good weather. In addition to landscapes, he also painted villages and everyday situations of the population, although these were not always true to life and were always seen from a great distance. He created both watercolors and oil paintings. In the early 1930s he travelled to Paris and Rome, among other places, to present his works at colonial exhibitions. His paintings were also shown in Sweden and Great Britain during this period. He returned to Greenland in 1935, as well as in 1937 and again after the end of the war in 1946. He died two years later at the age of 54.
Helicopters are a lifeline in Greenland. Of up to 70 inhabited towns and settlements only 13 have runways for airplanes, leaving transportation to the vast majority of the country up to the fleet of helicopters that create a highway in the sky.Out in the settlements, the heliports or helistop is simply a flat area in the terrain, and luggage arrives by ATV or snowmobile. Adaptations like this are key to keeping Greenland connected. In addition to commercial routes, Air Greenland also provides helicopter charter services in connection with mining exploration, documentary and movie filming, special interest photography, as well as for Search and Rescue missions, when needed. With so much responsibility in Greenland, one can easily see why Greenland Air proudly consider its helicopter pilots among the most amazing in the world. We honor all the brave Greenland Air pilots and staff on the 21st of June and hope that you will appreciate our selection of photos.
