Landseer Estelle M. Hurll The wide popularity of Landseer has been chieflydue to the circulation of engravings after his works. This little book is, so far as I know, the first attempt to bring together a collection of his pictures made in the modern process of half tone, from photographs direct from the original paintings. It is hoped that they may give a fairly good idea of the range and character of his art. ESTELLE M. HURLL. New Bedford, Mass. TITIAN By Estelle M. Hurll A short introduction to the art and long life of one of the greatest artists in history, Titian Vecelli. The art of Titian spans the whole of the Italian Renaissance, moving through many visual styles, ending up with a striking use of broken colour that looks forward to Impressionism. Titian created the full range of Renaissance artforms, including portraits, self-portraits, mythological and historical subjects, religious pictures, altarpieces, and many important commissions. The book (first published in 1902) is illustrated by works from each stage of Titian's lengthy and remarkable artistic career. Hurll provides entries on each of the major works by Titian. There are chapters of reference material, too - a chronology, historical context, Titian's contemporaries, and references. Fully illustrated. Includes notes on the works, and footnotes. 160 pages. www.crmoon.com
In figure painting Millet sought neither grace nor beauty, but expression. That he regarded neither of these first two qualities as intrinsically unworthy, we may infer from the grace of the Sower, and the na ve beauty of the Shepherdess and the Woman Sewing. But that expression was of paramount interest to him we see clearly in the Angelus and the Man with the Hoe. The leading characteristic of his art is strength, and he distrusted the ordinary elements of prettiness as taking something from the total effect he wished to produce. "Let no one think that they can force me to prettify my types," he said. "I would rather do nothing than express myself feebly." It was always his first aim to make his people look as if they belonged to their station.
