Pens et form sous leurs yeux, ce livre leur appartient. Sans la maintenir express ment, l'auteur la rappelle dans l' dition nouvelle, et il y ajoute dans les notes des claircissements pr cieux. Voyageant en Suisse dans l' t de 1837, il s'arr ta quelques jours Lausanne, o il avait un ami, M. Juste Olivier, notre po te. Dans le courant de la conversation, il exprima le regret de ne pouvoir trouver une ann e d'entier loisir pour mener bonne fin ou mettre du moins en pleine voie d'ex cution le projet qu'il nourrissait depuis longtemps d'une histoire de Port-Royal. Cette parole, jet e au hasard, ne tomba pas terre. Peu de jours apr s, M. Olivier sondait M. Sainte-Beuve pour savoir s'il accepterait de faire l'acad mie de Lausanne un cours d'une ann e sur Port-Royal.
