Evelyn Scott’s first novel, The Narrow House, depicts a family stricken by dysfunctional domesticity. Revolving around troubled members of the Farley family, Scott exposes notions of romantic love, longing, and the image of the Southern belle as damaging, unrealistic constructs, all against the backdrop of a seemingly normal middle-class existence that in previous decades had been idealized in Southern writing. Published to high praise when it appeared in 1921, The Narrow House vaulted Scott to literary celebrity in her day.In this new critical edition, Mary E. Papke contextualizes Scott’s first and possibly best writing effort with an astute introduction that discusses Scott and her contemporaries, the work’s importance to the genre of the novel, and the small but ongoing reclamation of Scott’s place in literary history. Completely updated and formatted for a modern readership, this critical edition of The Narrow House is sure to find its way into classrooms and onto bookshelves.

The hot, bright street looked almost deserted. A sign swung before the disheveled building at the corner and on a purple ground one could read the notice, "Robinson & Son, Builders," painted in tall white letters. Some broken plaster had been thrown from one of the windows and lay on the dusty sidewalk in a glaring heap. The old-fashioned house next door was as badly in need of improvements as the one undergoing alterations. The dingy brick walls were streaked by the drippage from the leaky tin gutter that ran along the roof. The massive shutters, thrown back from the long windows, were rotting away. Below the lifted panes very clean worn curtains hung slack like things exhausted by the heat.

Precipitations is a collection of poetry that explores the emotional and sensory dimensions of modern existence through a blend of introspection, observation, and lyrical expression. The work reflects the tension between the vitality of urban life and the quiet contemplation of nature, capturing the contrasts that define human experience. Each poem reveals a nuanced awareness of beauty, transience, and the search for meaning amid change. The collection moves from depictions of bustling cityscapes to meditative reflections on love, loss, and identity, showing the poet's ability to find rhythm and resonance in both chaos and stillness. Through vivid imagery and layered emotion, the poetry examines the fragility of existence and the interplay between creation and decay. The language evokes a sense of immediacy and depth, inviting readers to consider the connection between inner consciousness and the external world. Ultimately, the collection stands as a testament to the power of poetic expression to transform ordinary perception into profound understanding.
