F. Scott Fitzgerald's tale of tragic romance and material obsession set on the French Riviera, with a new Introduction by Michael NowlinBetween the First World War and the Wall Street Crash the French Riviera was the stylish place for wealthy Americans to visit. Among the most fashionable are psychoanalyst Dick Diver and his wife Nicole, who hold court at their villa. Into their circle comes Rosemary Hoyt, a film star, who is instantly attracted to them, but understands little of the dark secrets and hidden corruption that hold them together. As Dick draws closer to Rosemary, he fractures the delicate structure of his marriage and sets both Nicole and himself onto a dangerous path where only the strongest can survive. In this exquisite, lyrical novel, Fitzgerald has poured much of the essence of his own life; he has also depicted the age of materialism, shattered idealism and broken dreams.'One of the most wonderful writers of the twentieth century'Financial Times
"...the very vitality of the child irritated him...and one Sunday afternoon when she had disrupted a bridge game by permanently hiding up the ace of spades, he had made a scene that had reduced his wife to tears. -F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Baby Party (1925) The Baby Party (1925) was first published in Hearst's International Cosmopolitan at the height of the author's magazine fiction writing. Fitzgerald's family life is mirrored in the plot with the couple's romantic yet stormy relationship and birth of a daughter which only increases their marital discord. Delighted with the idea of having a child, the father, John, realizes the realities of parenthood make it far less appealing than he had envisioned. This story is for those who relish in a wry look at the misbehavior of children and adults alike written by a master storyteller.

One hundred years ago, F. Scott Fitzgerald published The Great Gatsby, a novel that captured the glamour, ambition, and illusions of the Jazz Age while exposing the cracks beneath its gilded surface. Over the past century, Gatsby's story has endured as a defining piece of American literature, studied, admired, and continually reinterpreted. Yet, within this celebrated novel, one character's voice has remained elusive--until now. With this centennial edition, we present The Great Gatsby alongside Libby Sternberg's Daisy, a critically acclaimed reimagining of the story from Daisy Buchanan's perspective. For decades, Daisy has been viewed through the lens of Gatsby's longing and Nick Carraway's detached observations. But who was Daisy, truly? What choices shaped her, and how did she see her own life amid the wealth and expectations of her era? By pairing these two books together, we invite readers to experience Gatsby's world in a new way--first through Fitzgerald's iconic prose and then through Daisy's own lens. We hope this edition will deepen readers' appreciation for both novels, offering a fresh perspective on agency, identity, and the weight of societal expectations--themes that resonate as powerfully today as they did in 1925. Whether you are revisiting Gatsby for the hundredth time or discovering Daisy's story for the first, we are honored to share this literary dialogue with you.

F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote in a friend's copy of Tender Is the Night, "If you liked The Great Gatsby, for God's sake read this. Gatsby was a tour de force but this is a confession of faith." Set in the South of France in the decade after World War I, Tender Is the Night is the story of a brilliant and magnetic psychiatrist named Dick Diver; the bewitching, wealthy, and dangerously unstable mental patient, Nicole, who becomes his wife; and the beautiful, harrowing ten-year pas de deux they act out along the border between sanity and madness. In Tender Is the Night, Fitzgerald deliberately set out to write the most ambitious and far-reaching novel of his career, experimenting radically with narrative conventions of chronology and point of view and drawing on early breakthroughs in psychiatry to enrich his account of the makeup and breakdown of character and culture.Tender Is the Night is also the most intensely, even painfully, autobiographical of Fitzgerald's novels; it smolders with a dark, bitter vitality because it is so utterly true. This account of a caring man who disintegrates under the twin strains of his wife's derangement and a lifestyle that gnaws away at his sense of moral values offers an authorial cri de coeur, while Dick Diver's downward spiral into alcoholic dissolution is an eerie portent of Fitzgerald's own fate. F. Scott Fitzgerald literally put his soul into Tender Is the Night, and the novel's lack of commercial success upon its initial publication in 1934 shattered him. He would die six years later without having published another novel, and without knowing that Tender Is the Night would come to be seen as perhaps its author's most poignant masterpiece. In Mabel Dodge Luhan's words, it raised him to the heights of "a modern Orpheus."
F. Scott Fitzgerald began composing Tender Is the Night in the summer of 1925, but he struggled with the novel and reworked it intensively over the next nine years. A study of the disintegration of a talented young American psychiatrist, set among wealthy American expatriates living in Europe after the First World War, the novel, finally published in 1934, is now considered one of his major works. Fitzgerald saved a great many of his working materials – notes, diagrams, holographs, typescripts, proofs and correspondence – making it possible to reconstruct in detail the passage of Tender Is the Night from manuscript to print. The Cambridge edition follows the order of the first edition; it includes a history of composition, an analysis of Fitzgerald's plan for republication and an explanation of the chronology of the narrative. The edition also contains full historical annotations, facsimiles of surviving drafts and a record of emendations.

First published in Scribner's Magazine between January and April 1934, 'Tender is the Night' is the final novel completed by American writer F. Scott Fitzgerald, widely regarded as one of the greatest American writers of the 20th century. The title is taken from the poem "Ode to a Nightingale" by John Keats. It is also the most intensely, even painfully, autobiographical of Fitzgerald's novels; it smolders with a dark, bitter vitality because it is so utterly true. In 1932, Fitzgerald's wife Zelda Sayre Fitzgerald was hospitalized for schizophrenia in Baltimore, Maryland. The author rented the 'la Paix' estate in the suburb of Towson to work on this book, the story of the rise and fall of Dick Diver, a promising young psychoanalyst, and his wife, Nicole, who is also one of his patients.

In a 1922 edition of a literary magazine edited by H. L. Mencken ("The Smart Set") is this mountain-sized 'gem' of a short story by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Preceding Fitzgerald's most famous work by three years, The Great Gatsby, in The Diamond as Big As The Ritz we see many of the same themes: the arrogance of extreme greed, gawdy exhibitions of wealth, and the murderous tactics that some will go to to protect their power and prestige. In this painstakingly-recreated edition of Fitzgerald's 1922 novella, we get a glimpse into the themes that Fitzgerald himself was pondering before he made it truly 'big.' This 'riches to even more riches to rags' tale is a highly entertaining and fast read for those looking to get a good taste of 1920's booming America.
