Then one of them, the youngest and most brilliant, overwhelmed by events, commits suicide: it's a shocking occurrence for all of them, but life must go on.Yet, after many years, a new tragedy upsets their lives once again: it is a death announced by omens and voices from the past... and it will not be the only one.

The Moon, the celestial body closest to us, has always been an "object of desires" for us human beings. Generally loved, but sometimes even feared, it influences our life (as well as that of every other living being on Earth) and illuminates our dreams. One of these dreams, 50 years ago -July 20th, 1969- became a reality thanks to the Apollo 11 mission. - "Oh, Moon, Heaven's feather, So diaphanous, Arid, Do you ferry the murmur of naked souls?"

Years ago I wrote this short poem, between the serious and the facetious: You need to avoid all the mawkishness, thoseSweetish affectations that so often fillLove poems - You told yourselfAnd that's why you didn't write any(from 'Fragments of Memory', 'Fragment CXXX')Of course it is an ironic remark, as I wanted to induce a smile in the reader. And I can assure you that I've written love poems -at least a few Moreover, how can one write a "poem of the soul," without the powerful help of the feeling of LOVE?(Fabrizio Frosini)--The variety in poems presented here is quite astonishing, and I can say that I found words of real value in each of them.(Tom Billsborough)

'One Step at a Time', as the title implies, is another effort of these poets to take little steps towards a full knowledge of human nature...A few lines from the collection: - "Even if I was the only ritual singer/ In the vast mountain province/ You won't have cherished to excess, / In my humble tunes, the symphony of hymns." (Kasiviswanathan Balakrishnan)- "And my resolve to find that point/ Where verse and song may merge," (Tom Billsborough)- "Re-start./ Back to where healing started, / Different, this time./ The hope had died./ Battling the love to end./ stronger." (Asavri Dhillon)- "A moment by itself and in itself, / It embodies all that is not: / The elusive lightness of reality." (Nadeem Ishaque)- "you are already there, patiently waiting/ for our paths to intertwine again." (Agatha-Eliza Laposi)- "Then paint my world/ And colour my hurts/ With your gentle smile" (Annette Potgieter)- "Touched by a/ Fathomless entity/ Heart deciphers mystical/ Love hieroglyphs." Good and Evil are very hard to define, and my fellow contributors to this collection have examined other aspects and sources of the subject to create a lively debate by their poems. I believe this to be an important topic at this time as the growth of irrational bigotry has become alarming in recent years, even in my own country England], and the voice of reason and understanding needs to be heard. This is a challenging topic and I thank my friend and co-editor, Fabrizio Frosini, for giving us this opportunity to express our views. The result is fascinating in depth and diversity. Many senryū are chosen and arranged according to the different situations (themes like sexual matters, family relations, politics, and so on), in order to offer the reader a sort of narrative. The Double Door

The Double Door

The artist Marcel Duchamp drew, in 1927, a curious door -actually it became a door to Duchamp's studio at 11 rue Larrey in Paris-: a double door sharing one hinge, that would admit a person to one of two thresholds, but only one per admittance, so when it swings on its hinge and opens into one space, it closes the entrance to the other.Note the simplicity of his image but the complexity of his concept. The concept involved is the "Threshold Experience", and the image is the 'double doorway' through which we enter and exit the spaces of our daily life. We can choose to enter a certain space or the other, and live our real experience, yet, at the same time we can see the other path -the one we've not chosen..There is a DOUBLE DOOR, which is an open threshold. Cross it and be welcomed to the other side. There is a double door, which admits only one traveler at a time. Your companions up to now must remain behind. The next step you take ALONE.There is a double door, it swings twice: once to immersion in the Psyche, once to release onto the World. Make your choice. There is a double door, on which it is written: 'ABANDON HOPE ALL YOU WHO ENTER HERE'. Will you boldly go forth, or will you boldly turn back? There is a double door: You two, standing apart, each in his/her own solitude.Make a friendship happen, then lift the door off its hinges. You can do it together.Throw it aside, it was just another prison door to crash through. There is a DOUBLE DOOR. Make of it what you will...

From the book: * "A dream that develops into a daydream one fine day after an afternoon nap. I had always been enchanted with the classic literature of kings and castles and the wars they fight. I had also been enchanted by what I read and the pictures I saw of the Scottish highland with mountains, castles and its beautiful landscape and had often dreamt myself living there. But, I am from the small hill town and descendant from the tribe where there had been warriors and head hunters..." (Venecia N Sangma) * "I belong to everyone's abstraction / and even I do not know the real nature of people" (Alexandro Acevedo Johns) * "I hope to be the fallen leaf you kindly push away" (Kasiviswanathan Balakrishnan) * "An aromatic, flowery but delicately scented / Passionate pen-and-paper love affair" (Annette Potgieter) * "They touched, healed, and the mountain shuddered. / They kissed, and aged fruit fell from the trees." Many years ago, in a poetry class for beginners, I read one of my early efforts which contained the following three lines: "A young poet drops his pen, astonished / by the twenty lines he has just written, / certain it is the Poem of Total Realization." The teacher smiled and said, "I remember thinking I had written that poem when I was sixteen." What we learn from writing poems over a long expanse of time is that each one takes further along the path of our daily life, leading eventually to whatever fulfills our existence. Each poem illuminates for its moment the darkness surrounding us, and in that light we can see the World in its glory or, sadly, in its degradation. Finally, we will carry within, not only the poem as a piece of literature but also the emotional growth it promotes. DJ Brick] ***Nature is wild and eagles and wolves will never be lovers. But certainly Poetry can overcome every obstacle and translates our dreams, desires, passions.. in images that evoke even a new, different Universe. Furthermore, Poetry is such a powerful tool: violence can kill, of course, but Words are stronger. Thus, Ideals/Values will be the final winner, because they can speak directly to hearts and minds - and touching them deeply, they can profoundly change a human being - Even the whole Humankind F. Frosini] ***In the arts repetition is the path of mastery. John Gielgud is said to have performed the role of Hamlet more than any actor in history. Only his innate modesty and respect for Shakespeare's genius kept him from claiming he had mastered the role. Those who witnessed his stage performances several times readily called him the master. A pianist of the caliber of Glenn Gould achieves greatness by rehearsing 'The Goldberg Variations' over and over, performing them again and again, continually discovering new details for each new performance. And the venerable Robert Frost was still reciting from memory poems he had written just before World War I in the 1960s and still charming audiences who knew them almost as well as he did. DJ Brick] ***Stating that our human nature is evil, would not be acceptable at all. Yet, it is beyond doubt that we humans are capable of behaving much and much worse than the most ferocious beasts, when our mental inhibitory-control fails to curb the worst and most pressing impulses. Nowadays, the rise of mass media has changed the way societies think and, unfortunately, exploiting mass psychology has become a lucrative affair for many. Politicians and CEOs of large corporations, in particular, know very well how to manipulate the masses, and in doing so, they can profoundly change our societies -our lives. Above all, through an increase in social inequality. And failing to deal with inequalities only leads to a rise of political extremes. F. Frosini]

This collection of 466 English haiku is a poetic life path, where various tales intertwine, in a "one-night-long" life -And indeed you can read all the poems in one night, or (much better) take it more easily, savoring a haiku at a time, in the intimate and comfortable slowness of several evenings... However, this is a book to keep where you can comfortably reach it: as on the bedside table, so that you can read (or reread) some haiku at a time, before a good sleep. I recommend it J.S.]*I enjoyed the book, and also enjoyed solving the quiz part Liz E. Pearson]

"Very informative and educational." P.S.S., USA] "Impressive. Thank you so much: it's very very helpful." M.H.N., India] "A very good haiku book. I had tried haiku before, but through your book I can now understand how far I was from real haiku " K.P., UK] * From Frosini's introduction: "This book comes from a project thought to introduce haiku poetry to a group of poets belonging in the free Association 'Poets Unite Worldwide'. When, many years ago, I "met with haiku poetry", in order to understand the basics, I had to refer to Japanese history and culture, so as to grab a bit of the Japanese mindset. Although a good number of critics argue that English-language haiku is separate from Japanese haiku and its tradition (and some add that haiku is not translatable), I stay with those who consider the value of tradition as the major guiding light on the way of haiku. Yet, this point of view does not mean to deny validity to gendai (modern) haiku, and indeed, many gendai haiku poets do respect tradition even in their being 'modern'. Over 170 are the haiku and senryu of this compilation. In addition, the poets who have submitted their poems for this book have granted me to add (when deemed useful), my own version -that is, how I would write that same haiku. I hope you'll find it helpful."
