"From Now On" is a novel written by Frank L. Packard written before 1927. The book is a gripping mystery story that follows the adventures of Jimmie Dale, a wealthy playboy who secretly leads a double life as a master thief known as "The Grey Seal." The story begins when Jimmie Dale is summoned to a secret meeting by the mysterious "Mother" and given a new assignment: to retrieve a valuable gemstone known as the Black Star from a ruthless gang of criminals. Along the way, he must navigate a dangerous maze of rival gangs, corrupt officials, and shadowy conspiracies. As the story unfolds, Jimmie Dale faces numerous challenges and setbacks, including a near-fatal encounter with an old enemy and a dangerous showdown with the Black Star gang. He also grapples with his own inner demons, including his love for a woman who may be part of the criminal underworld. The book is notable for its fast-paced action, intricate plot, and vividly drawn characters.
The author of the Jimmie Dale adventures is Frank L. Packard. It began as an intriguing tale of a young man who would break into safes at night to retaliate against the owner and give stolen money to the victims of his crimes. He was discovered by a woman, who then sent him letters with instructions on where to do it. After some time, the same situation started to repeat itself. And when he eventually discovered who she was and fell in love, it seemed like the conclusion was overly sentimental. The main character of the book, Jimmie Dale, also known as the Gray Seal, is an expert safe-cracking vigilante. He patrols the streets preventing criminal acts by thugs, returning stolen property, and defending the underprivileged. The cops and all the thieves he's stopped are after him since he always ends up looking like a criminal, which occurs in New York City. Awesome scenes at Chang Foo's opium den in Chinatown, colorful terminology, and a little amount of repetition.
This is the story of four Allied soldiers who found themselves lost behind the enemy lines. Later it is revealed that three of them are running high-class criminal organisations running scams in England and France. They stumble upon the great opportunity to make a big score in one action, and it leads to a complex and thrilling journey to the USA. The story has been well conceived and keeps the mystery guessing throughout.

Excerpt: "There is a Valley called the Valley of Illusion, but beyond it, sun-crowned, is the Peak of Eternal Truth--and the Way from the Valley to the Peak is sore beset, for the Way is the Understanding of Things Real, and its Achievement is the Fullness of Life. It was a wilder gust than any that had gone before. It tore along the beach with maniacal fury; and, shrieking in a high, devilishly-gleeful falsetto, while the joints of the little inn, rheumatic with age, squeaked in its embrace, shook the Taverne du Bas Rh ne much after the fashion of a terrier shaking a rat. And with that gust, loosening the dilapidated fastening on the casement, a window crashed inward, shattering the pane against the wall."
