This volume deals with the intellectual world of "progressive" Benedictine and Cistercian monks who vicariously represent humanists in cloisters (Klosterhumanismus, Bibelhumanismus) in German speaking lands: Conradus Leontorius (1460-1511), Maulbronn, Benedictus Chelidonius (c. 1460-1521), Nuremberg and Vienna, Bolfgangus Marius (1469-1544), Aldersbach in Bavaria, Henricus Urbanus (c. 1470-c. 1539), Georgenthal in the region of Gotha and Erfurt, Vitus Bild Acropolitanus (1481-1529), Augsburg, Nikolaus Ellenbog (1481-1543), of Ottobeuren. For the first time in historical-theological research, new insights are provided into the world of the "social group" called Monastic Humanists who emerged next to the better known Civic Humanists within the diverse, international phenomenon of Renaissance humanism.

Eight studies on the life and work of Marcus Marulus of Split (1450-1524) are assembled here under the title Catholic Advocate of the Evangelical Truth. They focus on what Marulus and Martin Luther have in common; on Marulus's Carmen, "Christ Speaking from the Cross"; on his metaphors for "empires" in his Latin works and in comparison with the contemporary German Humanist Ulrich von Hutten; on Marulus's open letter to the pope; on his reading of the four volumes of the illustrated Biblia Latina and samples of the marginalia which he entered; on his understanding of the "Rock" in Matthew 16:18; on the "Tree of the Cross" and other early Latin poetry; and on his view of Christian-Muslim relations.

The number of authors and texts are relatively small, but need to be brought out into the open. For the first time, a speech in praise of the language of the Jews by the early ecumenist, Georg Witzel (1501-1573), is made available in English. Other Catholic Hebraists who are featured include Johann Reuchlin (1455-1522), Matthaeus Adrianus (ca. 1470-1521), Robert Wakefield (died 1537), and Nicolaus Winmann (ca. 1500-1550). Their brilliant works are presented in front of the sinister backdrop of the vicious attacks against the Jews by the well-educated Catholic convert of Jewish descent, Johann Pfefferkorn (ca. 1469-1521), a self-appointed Catholic missionary to the Jews, and also against the background of the scandalous outbursts of the Grobian Reformer, Martin Luther (1483-1546). Volume 4 of the author's Collected Works fosters the idea that Jews and Christians are ""study partners,"" rather than antagonists--as visualized in the new statue ""Synagogue and Church in Our Time"" (as shown on the cover).

This is the first biography in English of Johann Reuchlin (1455-1522), based upon the new critical edition of his correspondence. Reuchlin became most famous as the Catholic defender of Jewish books at the beginning of the 16th century, clarifying the Catholic Church’s position toward the Jews. The book contributes to the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Declaration on Relations with the Jews of the Second Vatican Council in 1965. Marcus Marulus or Marko MaruliAe (1450-1524) is known as the Father of Croatian Literature and as the first Croatian Bible scholar. Much of his literary work is inspired by his study of the Sacred Scriptures. This book is an introduction to Marulus' central religious matrix, the Latin Bible, and his use of it. We are fortunate to have access to Marulus' desk copy of the Biblia Latina in four volumes, with introductions and commentaries that customarily accompanied the Bibles in the fifteenth century. This book is the first ever to investigate Marulus' biblical hermeneutics, and it lays the groundwork for further literary and theological studies on Marulus and his time. The book is accompanied by a DVD of the four volumes of the Biblia Latina of 1489 with Marulus' handwritten marginalia.

Johann von Staupitz is generally acknowledged as one of the most important influences on Martin Luther, convincing him of the sin-remitting grace of God. It was this revelation that was to spur Luther to formulate his theology of salvation by faith alone which was to lead to his break with the Catholic church. When Luther was brought to task by the church authorities for his heretical views it was Staupitz who was deputed to remonstrate with him, and it was Staupitz who sent a copy of his theses on indulgences to the Pope. Despite Luther's defection from Rome, he was to remain on good terms with the orthodox Staupitz who was consistently at the forefront of reformation within the Catholic Church. This book sheds light on the spiritual and theological beliefs of Staupitz, placing him in the midst of the late medieval reform efforts in the Augustianian order. It argues that as reformer, sermonizer, and friend of humanists Staupitz was a major player in the world of early sixteenth century theology who had a profound influence on the course of the Reformation.
