Den ldre Edda er sammen med Snorres Edda den prim re kilde til vor viden om nordisk mytologi og dermed den vigtigste kilde til forst elsen af den religi se tankegang i det f rkristne Norden. Eddaen best r af to dele: en afdeling med gudesange og en afdeling med heltesange. Bortset fra Hyndlasangen indeholder Winkel Horns overs ttelse samtlige digte fra de to dele. Overs ttelsen adskiller sig fra andre overs ttelser bl.a. ved, at digtenes oprindelige metrik er erstattet af en mere nutidig. Bogen indeholder desuden et appendix med seks eddadigte, som Winkel Horn genoversatte sm tyve r efter den oprindelige overs ttelse.
