Caste, Entrepreneurship and the Illusions of Tradition is an ethnographic study of the potters of Kolkata’s Kumartuli, an analysis of their lives and the related commodification and instrumentalization of caste. This group of artisans turned artists do not display passive responses to colonial and capitalist encounters but engage actively with the modern and economic developments of society at large, redefining the concept of caste identity in the process. Caste, Entrepreneurship and the Illusions of Tradition suggests a new academic direction for the study of modern India, and of caste in particular, through an empirically grounded portrayal of the synthesis of traditional categories and contemporary realities.

Det har gått sport i å enten spå Indias nært forestående fall, eller å hevde at landet seiler opp som en framtidig stormakt, både økonomisk og politisk. Ofte tar slike spådommer utgangspunkt i en svært begrenset del av landets historie og samtid. Et ensidig fokus på korrupsjon, kastevesen og fattigdom, leder gjerne til dystopiske framtidsbeskrivelser. Et like ensidig fokus på den imponerende økonomiske veksten, indisk IT-teknologi og demokratiske reformer, gir på den annen side inntrykk av at alle indere snart tilhører middelklassen. Hvor er så dette gigantiske landet på vei? Framfor å gi bastante svar, gir Indiske utfordringer en mangefasettert og dyptloddende innføring i de utfordringene det samtidige India står overfor. Ifølge forfatterne representer disse utfordringene både hindringer og muligheter for landets videre utvikling. Boka formidler status på en rekke forskjellige samfunnsområder, som nasjonsbygging, økonomi, fordelingspolitikk, demokratiets vilkår og utenrikspolitikk – og viser derigjennom kompleksiteten i det indiske samfunnet. India som nasjon utgjør den overgripende rammen for framstillingen, men boka drøfter også regionale ulikheter knyttet til kjønn, kaste, og klasse.
