Freckles (1904) is a novel by Gene Stratton-Porter. An immediate bestseller, Freckles—her second novel—established Stratton-Porter’s reputation as a leading naturalist and writer of the American Midwest. Written for children and adults alike, Freckles is a classic tale of struggle and survival set in one of Indiana’s iconic wilderness regions. Raised in an orphanage, targeted for his red hair, accent, and missing right hand, Freckles grew accustomed to constant abuse. As an adult, he escapes Chicago and makes his way to the Limberlost Swamp, a vast wetland region along the Wabash River in Indiana. There, he finds work with the Grand Rapids lumber company, earning the trust of experienced woodsman McLean. Tasked with walking the perimeter of the forest to protect the company’s land from thieves, Freckles gains a reputation as a dedicated and efficient guardian of the trees. When a fight leaves him badly injured, he meets a beautiful young girl while recovering from his injuries. For the first time in his life, he knows what it is to be loved. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Gene Stratton-Porter’s Freckles is a classic work of American literature reimagined for modern readers.

Elnora Comstock has always felt different. Raised on the edge of the vast Limberlost Swamp, her life is forever associated with the death of her father, who drowned in quicksand while her mother Katharine was going into labor. Despite this tragedy, her mother has maintained a reverence for the swamp, refusing to sell their land for timber or mineral rights like most of her neighbors have done. Now a teenager, Elnora struggles to connect with other high schoolers, most of whom are unaccustomed to the rhythms of the natural world. Mired in poverty, she refuses to give up, soon excelling in her classes and becoming an accomplished violinist. Nevertheless, she still feels she must prove herself to her mother, who remains stuck in the past. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Gene Stratton-Porter’s A Girl of the Limberlost is a classic work of American literature reimagined for modern readers.

Gene Stratton-Porter (August 17, 1863 - December 6, 1924) was an American author, amateur naturalist, wildlife photographer, and one of the earliest women to form a movie studio and production company. She used her position and income as a well-known author to support conservation of Limberlost Swamp and other wetlands in the state of Indiana. Her novel Freckles is the beautifully written story of an orphaned boy who gets a job as a timber guard in Limberlost. He develops an interest in the wildlife of the swamp and in natural history, and falls in love with the beautiful Swamp Angel. Freckles is a tale about class differences and the challenges faced by the 'low-born' who believe they can rise above that prejudice. Captivating
A Girl of the Limberlost, a novel by American writer and naturalist Gene Stratton-Porter, was published in August 1909. It is considered a classic of Indiana literature. It is the sequel to her earlier novel Freckles. The story takes place in Indiana, in and around the Limberlost Swamp. Even at the time, this impressive wetland region was being reduced by heavy logging, natural oil extraction and drainage for agriculture. (The swamp and forestland eventually ceased to exist, though projects since the 1990s have begun to restore a small part of it.)Patricia Raub (Senior Lecturer of American Studies at the University of Massachusetts Boston) notes that Stratton-Porter was "one of the most popular woman novelists of the era, who was known for her nature books and her editorials on McCall's 'Gene Stratton-Porter Page' as well as for her novels." Raub writes, "At the time of her death in 1924, more than ten million copies of her books had been sold - and four more books were published after her death.Plot summary: The novel is set in northeastern Indiana. Most of the action takes place either in or around the Limberlost, or in the nearby, fictional town of Onabasha. The novel's main character, Elnora Comstock, is an impoverished young woman who lives with her widowed mother, Katharine Comstock, on the edge of the Limberlost. Elnora faces cold neglect by her mother, a woman who feels ruined by the death of her husband, Robert Comstock, who drowned in quicksand in the swamp. Katharine blames Elnora for his death, because her husband died while she gave birth to their daughter and could not come to his rescue. The Comstocks make money by selling eggs and other farm products, but Mrs. Comstock refuses to cut down a single tree in the forest, or to delve for oil, as the neighbors around them are doing, even though the added income would make their lives easier.
Set in the Limberlost Swamp area of Indiana, "Freckles" is American writer and naturalist Gene Stratton-Porter's 1904 novel about the titular character, a one-handed adult orphan who takes a job guarding timber in the swamp. Now an adult, he is hired on by the Grand Rapids lumber company to guard their valuable timber in the Limberlost Swamp. First published in 1909, "A Girl of the Limberlost" is American author and naturalist Gene Stratton-Porter's sequel to her 1904 novel "Freckles" and continues the stories of many of the same characters. Also set in Indiana near the Limberlost Swamp at the beginning of the 20th century, it tells the tale of Elnora Comstock, a young girl who is just entering high school at the outset of the novel. The story is one of Elnora's emerging adulthood and her struggles: to overcome her poverty; to win the love of her mother, who blames Elnora for her husband's death; to afford an education and a more secure future; and to find a romantic love of her own. Elnora is an admirable heroine, hard-working and diligent, respectful and resourceful. She collects moths and artifacts from the Limberlost to sell and uses the money to better herself and save for college. Like the rare moths she finds, Elnora too undergoes a transformation from a shy and reticent young girl into an intelligent and charming young lady, who earns the admiration of all she meets and eventually the love and acceptance she so desires. A classic and romantic coming of age story, "A Girl of the Limberlost" will delight readers of all ages. This edition is printed on premium acid-free paper.
