In this book, a new approach to approximation procedures is developed. This new approach is characterized by the common feature that the procedures are accurate without being convergent as the mesh size tends to zero. This lack of convergence is compensated for by the flexibility in the choice of approximating functions, the simplicity of multi-dimensional generalizations, and the possibility of obtaining explicit formulas for the values of various integral and pseudodifferential operators applied to approximating functions. The developed techniques allow the authors to design new classes of high-order quadrature formulas for integral and pseudodifferential operators, to introduce the concept of approximate wavelets, and to develop new efficient numerical and semi-numerical methods for solving boundary value problems of mathematical physics. The book is intended for researchers interested in approximation theory and numerical methods for partial differential and integral equations.

This book introduces a new fast high-order method for approximating volume potentials and other integral operators with singular kernel. These operators arise naturally in many fields, including physics, chemistry, biology, and financial mathematics. A major impediment to solving real world problems is the so-called curse of dimensionality, where the cubature of these operators requires a computational complexity that grows exponentially in the physical dimension. The development of separated representations has overcome this curse, enabling the treatment of higher-dimensional numerical problems. The method of approximate approximations discussed here provides high-order semi-analytic cubature formulas for many important integral operators of mathematical physics. By using products of Gaussians and special polynomials as basis functions, the action of the integral operators can be written as one-dimensional integrals with a separable integrand. The approximation of a separated representation of the density combined with a suitable quadrature of the one-dimensional integrals leads to a separated approximation of the integral operator. This method is also effective in high-dimensional cases. The book is intended for graduate students and researchers interested in applied approximation theory and numerical methods for solving problems of mathematical physics.

This book introduces and develops new algebraic methods to work with relations, often conceived as Boolean matrices, and applies them to topology. Although these objects mirror the matrices that appear throughout mathematics, numerics, statistics, engineering, and elsewhere, the methods used to work with them are much less well known. In addition to their purely topological applications, the volume also details how the techniques may be successfully applied to spatial reasoning and to logics of computer science. Topologists will find several familiar concepts presented in a concise and algebraically manipulable form which is far more condensed than usual, but visualized via represented relations and thus readily graspable. This approach also offers the possibility of handling topological problems using proof assistants.

The investigations refer to the development of plant phenology since the 1960s in Germany. Spatiotemporal trends were assessed by means of regression kriging. It could be shown that there already is a distinct shift of phenological onset towards the beginning of the year of up to two weeks. In future, a shift of up to one month was calculated till 2080. Moreover, a prolongation of the vegetation period of up to three weeks was found. The findings are relevant for the development of mitigation measures to prevent from environmental, agricultural and economic issues due to climate change.

This book investigates the spatial distribution of potential temperature-driven malaria transmissions, using the basic reproduction rate (R0) to model the reproduction of the malaria pathogen Plasmodium vivax. The authors mapped areas at risk of an outbreak of tertian malaria in the federal state of Lower Saxony (pre-study) and for whole Germany (main-study) by means of geostatistics for past (1947-2007) and future periods. Projections based on predicted monthly mean air temperature data derived from the IPCC and regionally discriminated by two regional climate models (REMO, WettReg) for the countrywide study.
