Il touche des patients ayant une bonne ou une mauvaise hygi ne buccale, mais sa pr valence est plus lev e chez les hommes et les personnes g es. Le recul des gencives fait r f rence la localisation de la gencive et non son tat. La gencive r tract e peut tre enflamm e mais peut tre normale, l'exception de sa position. Il peut tre localis ou g n ralis et peut affecter une ou plusieurs surfaces dentaires, les surfaces buccales tant les plus fr quemment touch es. La r cession gingivale peut tre caus e par des maladies parodontales, des accumulations, des inflammations, une mauvaise utilisation du fil dentaire, un brossage agressif des dents, des relations occlusales incorrectes et des racines dominantes.

Odstające dziąsla stanowią jeden z najczęstszych problem w estetycznych i funkcjonalnych przyzębia, ale także jeden z najbardziej zlożonych pod względem etiologii i sposob w leczenia. Dotyczy zar wno pacjent w z dobrą, jak i zlą higieną jamy ustnej, ale z większą częstością występuje u mężczyzn i w starszym wieku. Obrzęk dziąsel odnosi się do umiejscowienia dziąsla, a nie jego stanu. Odwr cone dziąslo może byc w stanie zapalnym, ale może też byc normalne, z wyjątkiem polożenia. Może miec charakter miejscowy lub uog lniony i dotyczyc jednej lub kilku powierzchni zęb w, przy czym najczęściej dotyczy to powierzchni policzkowych. Recesja dziąsel może byc spowodowana przez choroby przyzębia, nagromadzenia, stany zapalne, niewlaściwe nitkowanie, agresywne szczotkowanie zęb w, nieprawidlowe relacje zgryzowe i korzenie dominujące.
