John Grantham Browne is rich, extremely rich - a millionaire many times over, but there's a mystery affort. Sit back and enjoy another great crime classic from the pen of Guy Boothby.
Boothbys fifth novel of five about the notorious Doctor Nikola, an occultist anti-hero seeking immortality and world domination. Nikola may be the world's first modern super villain: he is a master of hypnotism and mind control, a telepathic adept, and an astral projectionist. He can cause ordinary men to see images in pools of liquid, and prophesy into the future. It's said that he knows the hour, moment, and method of his own demise. "At first I came to the conclusion that it must be a bat, or some night bird, but that theory exploded. Bats do not remain at the same exact distance from the floor, nor do they stand stationary behind a man's chair for any length of time. The hour will come, however, when it will be possible for us to see these things; I am on the track even now."
Introducing Simon Carne, a gentleman thief predating both E. W. Hornung's A. J. Raffles and Maurice Leblanc's Ars ne Lupin. The British Viceroy first meets Carne while traveling in India. Charmed, he invites the reclusive hunchbacked scholar to London, little suspecting that his guest is actually an adventurer and a master of disguise. Carne-aided by his loyal butler, Belton-embarks on a crime spree, stealing from London's richest citizens and then making fools of them by posing as a detective investigating the thefts.
Richard Hatteras, on holiday in Sydney, rescues a lovely young woman in distress, the start of a series of events that sees him falling in love and becoming ever more entangled in the machinations of the shadowy Doctor Nikola, villain, gentleman, and occult adventurer, who will stop at nothing to steal his prize. Boothby's Nikola may be the world's first modern super villain: he is a master of hypnotism and mind control, a telepathic adept, and an astral projectionist. He can cause ordinary men to see images in pools of liquid, and prophesy into the future. It's said that he knows the hour, moment, and method of his own demise.

First published in 1901, this novel by best-selling author Guy Boothby tells story of three men in the jungles of Burma who find an amazing treasure in the form of rubies and sapphires. They come to blows over the treasure, even though there is more than enough for all of them, and split up. One of the men sneaks off with the majority of the jewels and leaves the other two to the mercy of the Chinese. Later, back in England, the two stranded treasure hunters turn up at the office of a detective. They want him to find their "partner" and retrieve the jewels. The two men are in pretty bad shape: one has been blinded, and the other has had his tongue cut out, but the chase roams all over London and through Paris and parts of Italy...
