First published in 1951, In Defence of Reason is a series of philosophical essays written at various times. Some of them are devoted to the interpretation of Kant’s philosophy, a subject which the author has made specially his own. Many of them, however, are concerned with more general topics, among which may be mentioned fashion and philosophy, self-identity, and Existentialism as an attitude to life. The main interest throughout is the defence of reason against views which reduce man to a plaything of circumstances and make his moral judgments the mere expression of non-rational emotions. This book will appeal to students and researchers of philosophy.

Originally published in 1968, and at a time when discontent with Westminster was growing along with the desire for an independent Scottish government, this book gives historical background but also discusses 20th Century political, administrative, legal and economic matters. Originally published in 1955, this is a collection of works the philosophy of religion that four Forwood Lectures on the philosophy of religion, which were delivered in the University of Liverpool in 1949. It developed into two series of Gifford Lectures given in the University of St. Andrews in the years 1950 and 1951.

Written in 1927, this book presents a study in the Coherence Theory of Goodness and looks at areas of will and its context, self and self-knowledge, the world and self and develops into the will as immediate and as individual. The book ends on will as both moral and social. It looks at goodness on two main sides The first is that goodness has its roots in the spiritual activity called willing; that it belongs to things, not in themselves, but as objects of some kind of willing. The second is that goodness belongs to the coherent will; that different kinds of goodness, whether in actions or in things, are due to the different kinds of coherence in the will which wills them; and that moral goodness in particular belongs to a will which. is coherent as a member of an all-inclusive, society of coherent wills.
