This important book by a respected scholar provides a far-reaching historical analysis of how theory and practice have together shaped the identity of present-day social work. Including a close analysis of two well-known practitioner exemplars – Jane Addams and Mary Richmond – this ambitious survey carefully weaves together a situationally contextualised exploration of actual social work practice with an analysis of the key conceptual and research preoccupations that have characterised social work’s academic development. The theoretical and research themes include: - early positivism - Marxism- psychology- evidence-based practice - globalisation- debates about the science of social work. This is a detailed, scholarly analysis of social work’s roots, development and boundaries at practice, research and theoretical levels, informed by a wide social science framework. Now truly international in perspective, this new edition of a classic text will be of high value to advanced level students, researchers and professionals who are interested in where social work has come from and what promises and challenges it faces.

Written by leading authorities in the field, this challenging book addresses complex issues of ethnicity and racial discrimination in ways that encourage further debate and analysis. Its main theme is that social work has been and remains, deeply implicated in racist policies and practices that have been locality specific, but that racism is also recognizable across borders as a phenomenon that appears everywhere. At the same time, the book focuses on innovative theories and practice which seek to promote an emancipatory social work which sets itself the goal of eradicating social injustice - particularly that applying to race. The contributors come from a wide range of countries and describe their experiences in tackling racism in social work at the levels of both theory and practice. This provides an impressive range of perspectives which cover models of social work created by people who have had to live with racism and find ways of overcoming it as well as those who have struggled to become able to express their own ethnicity without oppressing others. The concluding message of the book is a positive one - people can create a world that goes beyond racial divides by accepting, validating and celebrating diversity while at the same time recognizing that people share many commonalities with others which can be used to establish egalitarian relationships, realize social justice and communicate effectively with each other.

Translation and Implementation of Evidence-Based Practice

Translation and Implementation of Evidence-Based Practice

It is one thing to do social work research, but quite another to disseminate the results and ensure their effective utilization by practitioners out in the field working with clients. Just as important is ensuring that the research is relevant and usable by the social and health service community. Implementation research and translational research are designed to develop effective methods for narrowing the gap between research and practice. Using the National Institutes of Health Roadmap as a guide, this book fills a gap in social work writing by describing the challenges of investigating the process and outcomes of efforts to translate and implement evidence-based practices in social work. A general introduction discusses the history of such efforts and a picture of where we are now. Subsequent chapters offer in-depth examinations of the methods for studying the effectiveness, dissemination, and implementation of evidence-based practices; discuss the organizational context in which these activities occur in social work practice; investigate the use of mixed-method designs and community-based participatory methods to address these challenges; provide case studies of research on translation and implementation; identify potential barriers and offer recommendations and guidelines for addressing them. The resulting strategy is founded on the principle and practice of cultural exchange between members of social worker-led interdisciplinary research teams, and between researchers and practitioners. Decision-makers in social service agencies and policy settings, in addition to professors and master's and doctoral-level students, will all want to read this vital and informative book that brings core issues of research and practice to life.
