The God of All Comfort is an inspiring manual of faith by Hannah Whitall Smith, who was one of the leading authors of Christian advice in the late nineteenth century. Smith, having lived and witnessed a life of supreme faith to God, writes her account of the principles of the Lord and Jesus Christ. I freely confess that there are many difficult parts about which I know nothing, but before which I have learned to sit down in the silence and contentment of faith, and await patiently the day of God's explanations. My object has been, not to explain the Bible, but simply to give, as far as I have seen it, the deep inner sense of the Books of the Old Testament, in their progressive development of truth and experience. These views have been opened to me principally through the writings and teachings of a few of the Lord's see-ers, or '' seers, '' chief among whom I would mention the Rev. Andrew Jukes, of England; and they have been made so great a blessing to my own spiritual life, that I long to have others share them with me. There may be very honest doubts as to the correctness of interpreting the Old Testament in this typical way, and I would not contend with these. But I have found in my own heart, and in the hearts of many others, a certain spiritual sense which has led us instinctively to accept and enjoy this application of the Old Testament Scriptures. and it is to such I speak in this book. Nor are we without large warrant in the, New Testament for this typical or symbolical interpretation, as in many instances the inspired writers there, make just such an application of the Old Testament narratives. See Gal. iv. 22-31: Heb. v.; vii.; ix.; x., &c. And notice especially the positive declaration made in 1 Car. x. 1-1 I concerning the story of the children of Israel: "Now all these things were our types; '' and again, "Now all these things happened unto them for types." Our text reads "examples" or "ensamples.'' but the true rendering is "figures" or "types," as can be seen by a reference to the original, or to the margins of our reference Bibles. I feel, therefore, that we are justified in seeking for this mystic sense in that, which might otherwise be of but little value to us spiritually. And I send forth these Readings to those who can receive them, with a heart- felt prayer that the Lord may use them to His glory. H.W.S.

I frankly confess I have not been trained in theological schools, and do not understand their methods nor their terms. But the Lord has taught me experimentally and practically certain lessons out of His Word, which have greatly helped me in my christian life, and have made it a very happy one. And I want to tell my secret, in the best way I can, in order that some others may be helped into a happy life also. I do not seek to change the theological views of a single individual. I dare say most of my readers know far more about theology than I do myself, and perhaps may discover abundance of what will seem to be theological mistakes. But let me ask that these may be overlooked, and that my readers will try, instead, to get at the experimental point of that which I have tried to say, and if that is practical and helpful, forgive the blundering way in which it is expressed. I have tried to reach the absolute truth which lies at the foundation of all "creeds" and '' views," and to bring the soul into those per- sonal relations with God which must exist alike in every form of religion, let the expression of them differ as they may. I have committed my book to the Lord, and have asked Him to counteract all in it that is wrong, and to let only that which is true find entrance into any heart. It is sent out in tender sympathy and yearn- ing love for all the struggling, weary ones in, the Church of Christ, and its message goes right from my heart to theirs. I have given the best I have, and could do no more. May the blessed Holy Spirit use it to teach some of my readers the true secret of a happy life HANNAH WHITALL SMITH.
