Points of Departure: Refusal of Work and the Crisis of Capitalism: The Collected Writings of Harry Cleaver
"Refuse work. Revolt against capitalism. Read Harry Cleaver. In that order. Repeat." This is a definitive collection of Harry Cleaver's best unpublished, translated, or lesser known writings-both historic and current-on the refusal of work, class composition and "inversion of the class perspective," the crisis of capitalism, and the ongoing necessity of re-reading Marx theory to understand, find points of departure from, and "finally end capitalism before it ends us." Edited by organizers Robert Ovetz and Kevin Van Meter to launch the Class Compositions imprint at Common Notions.
The Fragile Juggernaut: Marx & Engels on Capitalism, Class Struggle and Crisis
Whether loving or hating it, many visualize capitalism as an unstoppable juggernaut. For those of us who would defeat it, we must identify its weaknesses. Fortunately, Marx and Engels' writings on "crisis" reveal them. They show how its endless imposition of exploitative and alienating work creates such antagonistic conflicts everywhere as to make it, ultimately, a far more fragile monster than it first appears. Each of its efforts to shape social relationships, subordinating them to the work of commodity production and its control over society, has been and can be thrown into crisis by those of us resisting its way of life and seeking to create more appealing alternatives.

This book situates John Locke’s philosophy of knowledge and his political theory within his engagement in British monetary debates of the 17th and 18th century. Anchored in extensive archival research, George Caffentzis offers the most expansive reading of Locke’s economic thought to date, contextualizing it within the expansion of capitalist accumulation on a world scale and the universality of money as a medium of exchange. Updated with a new introduction by Paul Rekret, a new foreword by Harry Cleaver and new material by the author, Clipped Coins, Abused Words, and Civil Government continues to make a significant intervention in contemporary debates around the history of capitalism, colonialism and philosophy.

This book provides an up-to-date reading of Capital Volume I, emphasizing the relevance of Marx's analysis to everyday twenty-first century struggles. Harry Cleaver's treatise outlines and critiques Marx's analysis chapter by chapter. His unique interpretation of Marx's labour theory of value reveals how every theoretical category of Capital designates aspects of class struggle in ways that help us resist and escape them. At the same time, while rooted within the tradition of workerism, he understands the working class to include not only the industrial proletariat but also unwaged peasants, housewives, children and students. A challenge to scholars and an invaluable resource for students and activists today.

"Rupturing the Dialectic rejects the quietism inherent in all economistic approaches to the current crises within capitalism, and furnishes working people with a clear, concrete, sensible program for how to move forward. This is a fine book, and it is one from which activists will greatly benefit." --David Sherman, author of Sartre and Adorno "Cleaver's theory of the value of labor to capital, explanation of money as a critical mediator of class conflicts, and discussion of strategies for resistance and transformation are remarkable. Rupturing the Dialectic offers emancipating ways to understand everyday life and financial crises in capitalism today." --Anitra Nelson, author of Marx's Concept of Money "Rupturing the Dialectic shows us how we may use Marx's labor theory of value to resist the subordination of our lives to labor. Cleaver's incisive analysis offers the prospect of getting beyond the capitalist dialectic, rather than merely idealizing it." --Brett Caraway, professor, the University of Toronto Since his groundbreaking Reading Capital Politically was first published in 1979, Harry Cleaver has been a central figure for autonomist Marxists seeking practical, political strategies within Marx's work--as opposed to abstraction and historical inevitability. His work since has shown not only how capitalism seeks to structure every aspect of our lives through and around work but also how we endlessly fight back in ways that reshape capitalism itself. Rupturing the Dialectic brings this project up to the present by interpreting capitalism's most recent crises, tracing their causes, and demonstrating how ordinary people can, and do, rupture the smooth functioning of the system that exploits them. Harry Cleaver was a university professor for three decades, before retiring in 2012. His book Reading Capital Politically has been republished in seven languages and ten countries.

Storming Heaven is the only book which looks at Italian workerist theory and practice, from its origins in the anti-Stalinist left of the 1950s to its heyday twenty years later. It focuses on the theme of workerism, or 'operaismo', which includes the refusal of work, class self-organisation, mass illegality and the extension of revolutionary agency, of of which are still practiced today by workers across the world. Emphasising the dynamic nature of class struggle as the distinguishing feature of workerist thought, Storming Heaven reveals how this form of radical politics developed alongside emerging social movements to great effect. It assesses the strengths and limitations of workerism as first developed by Antonio Negri, Mario Tronti, Sergio Bologna and others. This edition includes a new chapter looking at the debates around operaismo and Autonomia since the book originally appeared in 2002, and is updated with a new foreword and afterword.
