Sarjakuvissa Flash Gordon tovereineen seikkailee ensin planeetta Mongolla mutta myöhemmin myös muualla avaruudessa valoa nopeammin liikkuvalla aluksellaan.Suomessa sarjakuvaa julkaistiin Uudessa Suomessa vuosikymmenten ajan, ja sarja ilmestyi myös muissa sanomalehdissä ja sarjakuvajulkaisuissa.DAN BARRY piirsi Flash Gordonia vuosina 1951-1990, vuodesta 1967 alkaen myös sunnuntaisarjaa. Tunnettu scifi-kirjailija HARRY HARRISON käsikirjoitti sarjaa vuosina 1958-1970. Tehtävä Plutossa -albumiin on koottu Harrisonin vuosina 1967-1970 käsikirjoittamat sarjat, joita pidetään parhaina Flash Gordonin pitkässä julkaisuhistoriassa. Niitä ei tiettävästi ole aikaisemmin julkaistu suomeksi.Mac Raboy piirsi kirjan ensimmäisen seikkailun ja hänen yllättävän kuolemansa jälkeen 12.13.1967 Dan Barry jatkoi sarjaa.
