We ask who—or what, and how—is the person of personalisation. Exploring practices across the domains of digital culture, healthcare and data science, this open-access book argues that they re-articulate relations between economy, politics and culture. Contemporary investment in big data, increasing computational power and ‘real-time’ analytics have made participation in a culture of personalisation almost impossible to avoid. We must declare, measure and share our personal data in order to carry out many activities. ‘People Like You’ are simultaneously one and many: a group, a category, or a generic emerging from the mapping of publics onto populations. Focusing in-depth on case studies in digital culture, health care and data science, this book identifies common features of personalising practices to evaluate their significance for conceptions of the person. We explore three features: the use of tracking techniques; the formation of relations of likeness, resemblance or similarity on the basis of practices of liking or preference; and new forms of contextualising persons in what Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg referred to as the “default social.” This book explores the implications of these techniques for the stratification of populations, processes of inclusion, exclusion and belonging, and the assetisation of data, and how they combine to create to create new emphases on the individual, dividual and generic person. The eBook editions of this book are available open access under a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 licence on bloomsburycollections.com. Open access was funded by The Wellcome Trust.

* SHORTLISTED FOR THE KATE GREENAWAY AWARD *Once, the only sounds to be heard were the buzzing of bees in the grass, the murmuring of moles in the earth, and the song of birds in the sky. These warmed the hearts of those who cared to listen - until the others came to fill the sky with a cacophony of noise. With dramatically lit artwork and a spare, intriguing text, Varmints tells of a pastoral world in need of protection and of the souls who love it enough to ensure its regeneration.

The Oxford Handbook of Epidemiology for Clinicians provides all the information required by students and junior doctors who need to understand and translate key epidemiological concepts into medical practice. Unlike standard textbooks in this area, the focus throughout is on clinical applications of epidemiological knowledge. Divided into four sections, the handbook begins with the basics of epidemiology in the clinic, moving on to the theories behind evidence-based practice, discussions of optimum methods and studies, and then ends by looking at the epidemiology of common diseases. The material is presented in a logical manner, from problems to the most appropriate solutions or tools to be applied. Interesting topics such as controversies in prevention intervention encourage discussion and thought, and the authors pose sensible and important questions throughout. This handbook is a must for all junior doctors, medical students, and clinicians who need to apply epidemiological concepts to day-to-day practice or who want a practical step-by-step guide to undertaking research, conducting reviews of evidence, or writing up publications.

These examinations are commonly known as objective structured clinical examinations (OSCEs). The book is a preparation and revision tool, designed to be read in conjunction with any recommended core clinical textbooks: however, along with giving students step-by-step instructions on performing well in OSCE scenarios, it also gives guidance to academic staff on preparing to teach and mark OSCEs. This book uses a case study approach to OSCEs in a coherent, consistent, and easily understandable style.
