Fifty-two readings on living in intentional Christian community to spark group discussion.Gold Medal Winner, 2017 Illumination Book Awards, Christian LivingSilver Medal Winner, 2017 Benjamin Franklin Award in Religion, Independent Book Publishers AssociationWhy, in an age of connectivity, are our lives more isolated and fragmented than ever? And what can be done about it? The answer lies in the hands of God’s people. Increasingly, today’s Christians want to be the church, to follow Christ together in daily life. From every corner of society, they are daring to step away from the status quo and respond to Christ’s call to share their lives more fully with one another and with others. As they take the plunge, they are discovering the rich, meaningful life that Jesus has in mind for all people, and pointing the church back to its original calling: to be a gathered, united community that demonstrates the transforming love of God.Of course, such a life together with others isn’t easy. The selections in this volume are, by and large, written by practitioners—people who have pioneered life in intentional community and have discovered in the nitty-gritty of daily life what it takes to establish, nurture, and sustain a Christian community over the long haul.Whether you have just begun thinking about communal living, are already embarking on sharing life with others, or have been part of a community for many years, the pieces in this collection will encourage, challenge, and strengthen you. The book’s fifty-two chapters can be read one a week to ignite meaningful group discussion.Contributors include: John F. Alexander, Eberhard Arnold, J. The Limits of a Catholic Spirit fills the gap that is John Wesley and Catholicism. No other book has provided such an in-depth study of the perils Wesley faced when he encountered Catholicism. With the use of rare primary sources that tell of anti-Methodist riots in Ireland to Wesley's preachers getting kidnapped and forced to serve in the army, this study will provide you with historical information you've never encountered. It will explore questions that have held Wesley scholars captive for decades. Was John Wesley responsible for sparking the anti-Catholic Gordon Riots of 1780 in London? Kelly Diehl Yates searched eighteenth-century documents in the National Archives of the United Kingdom to find out. Was John Wesley aligned with the Jesuits? Was John Wesley a Jacobite, an enemy of the British Crown? Did John Wesley require Irish Catholics to denounce Catholicism to join Methodist societies? By the end of The Limits of a Catholic Spirit, you'll find answers to all these questions and more.

The church in the Western world is largely faltering in its spiritual and missional vitality. There's a crisis of piety--or the devout life--heartfelt devotion to Christ and his cause. The Pietist movement of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries grew into a revolutionary torrent of spiritual renewal that influenced the Moravians, the Methodists, the great awakenings, and global evangelicalism as we know it today. The Devout Life explores and expands on ten key features of Pietism to plunge the depths of spiritual renewal for today. ""Many great spiritual writers in Christian history were busy pastors and administrators. This ultimately depends upon the disposition of the heart--the orientation of the affective and controlling center of the self. Roger Helland passionately believes this still. Drawing upon the legacy of classic Pietism, he calls for a renewal of heartfelt, 'all-in' devotion to Christ and his mission in the world."" --Glen G. Scorgie, Professor of Theology, Bethel Seminary San Diego ""Few books can both prick the Christian's conscience and compel the reader towards a deeper and more authentic relationship with God. Roger's appeal to historical Pietism and systematic application to modern discipleship stirs the heart and challenges the mind to move beyond intellectual and religious activity, to true intimacy with a living and loving God."" --Tom Blackaby, Pastor and former International Director of Blackaby Ministries International ""Spiritual growth requires transformation of our heart as well as our head. In The Devout Life, Roger Helland encourages both, drawing on the history of the Pietist movement to affect both mind and will. This rich stream of historical insight brings fresh perspective to our contemporary interest in the spiritual disciplines."" --Kenton C. Anderson, President, Northwest Baptist Seminary ""Sometimes there's a gap between a book's content and its author. Not here. Helland's prescription for the devout Christian life mines Scripture, Pietist and Puritan doctors alike, but also aligns with what I know to be Roger's deepest aspirations. May this prescription from a devoted disciple, a capable leader, and a competent scholar settle deeply into your heart as you read and the Spirit enables."" --David Guretzki, Executive Vice President, Evangelical Fellowship of Canada ""Roger Helland has written an engaging and stirring call to actually live the sanctified life as described in Scripture and experienced and taught by holy men and women down throughout the ages, particularly those in the Pietist tradition. I heartily recommend it. If read and applied, it would lead to the cure for so much staleness and bondage in the lives of believers and to the experience of a deeper experience of the presence of Christ. He has made a rich offering, especially to the evangelical Christian."" --Peter H. Davids, Visiting Professor, Houston Graduate School of Theology Roger Helland is district minister of the Baptist General Conference in Alberta, Canada. His passion is to stimulate spiritual and missional renewal in the church. He is the author of six books including Magnificent Surrender (2012) and Missional Spirituality (2011) and serves as an adjunct instructor in several Bible colleges and seminaries. Roger and his wife Gail live near Calgary.

The digital copies of this paper are available for free at First Fruit's website. place.asburyseminary.edu/firstfruits The United States is in critical need of massive reform. The same could be said of many other nations, but my focus here is the U.S. From one angle, reform is always needed, and typically reform surges run in generational cycles. But today is especially critical. For a host of reasons-among them the increasing complexity of society and of international relations-the spectrum of critical issues that must be addressed immediately is huge, unprecedented. They range from matters of physical infrastructure to large-scale issues of the mind, heart, and spirit.
