Hubertus von Amelunxen

The fourth volume in the planned catalogue raisonné of Michael Müller's artistic work comprising over 4 volumes a unique project spanning decades – not only offers an overview of Müller's painterly oeuvre, but also functions as an exhibition catalogue. It is dedicated to the monumental painting Der geschenkte Tag, measuring over x 5 m, which is was created for Michael Müller's solo exhibition at the Städel Museum in Frankfurt, 2 22. The 24-part painting as well as the exhibition as a whole elaborate on the Greek myth of the twins Castor and Pollux, the Dioscuri, which has received little attention from art history or philology and philosophy to date. In addition to the history of the works' creation, a compilation of historical textual sources and an extensive interview with the artist, essays, and a lyrical composition by American literary scholar and translator Stanley Lombardo will update the story of the Dioscuri for the 2 st century. A beautifully produced volume featuring the work of a major German artist. While a face may be considered a head, a head does not necessarily carry a face. Between 2015 and 2017, German artist Max Neuman, known for painting anonymous figures, drew a series of heads. Each head is a moment, each facing the viewer as if looking into a crowd, each distinguishable from the other. Who are they? May we call them portraits? Do they look back? Do they resemble spirits? Some Heads reproduces these haunting drawings along with an essay by cultural theorist and curator Hubertus von Amelunxen that questions the heads and faces while dwelling upon the effacement of individuality.

Unsere vierbändige Anthologie mit Texten zur Theorie der Fotografie Herausgeber der Bände 13 ist Wolfgang Kemp, Band 4 besorgte Hubertus v. Amelunxen ist längst zu einem Standardwerk geworden. Sie enthält alle wichtigen Äußerungen, Definitionen und Standortbestimmungen von den Anfängen des Mediums im frühen 19. Jahrhundert bis in unsere digitale Gegenwart. Gesammelt sind hier Texte, die den jeweiligen Stand der Diskussion reflektieren, die zu ihrer Zeit maßgeblich, auch wegweisend waren für die theoretische Aufarbeitung und die ästhetische Entwicklung eines Bildmediums, das seit seiner Erfindung im Jahr 1839 die Welt und unsere Wahrnehmung von ihr radikal veränderte. Die insgesamt 175 Texte von Naturwissenschaftlern, Philosophen, Literaten, Kulturtheoretikern, Kunstkritikern und Fotografen geben, von Kommentaren der Herausgeber begleitet, einen umfassenden Einblick in die Theoriegeschichte der Fotografie; sie erhellen die historischen und aktuellen Zusammenhänge und sind ein unschätzbarer Fundus an Meinungen, Information und anregenden Denkpositionen. Aus gegebenem Anlaß haben wir uns entschlossen, die vier Bände der seit 2000 abgeschlossenen Anthologie in einem einzigen, gewichtigen Band zusammenzufassen.
