The Lorado deposit was discovered in 1950 in a remote location in northern Saskatchewan, and just north of Lake Athabasca. Subsequent exploration and development led to a mine, mill, and associated campsites being built, all of which were fully operational by 1957. The Lorado mill was unique, having been designed to process ores from smaller, neighbouring mines that would otherwise not have succeeded. This made Lorado the third largest producer of uranium (yellowcake) concentrate in Saskatchewan and one of the top five in Canada during the Cold War era. By 1960 the markets for uranium had crashed and operations were closed but, having produced about 1,210 tonnes of uranium concentrate, Lorado had played a significant role in helping Canada become one of the largest uranium producers in the world. Beyond uranium, the Lorado mine produced about 500,000 m3 of highly acidic tailings, which entered nearby Nero Lake virtually destroying it. Following closure in 1960, the Lorado site stood abandoned for the next twenty years, until the site owners cleaned up most of the mine infrastructure in 1982, and the mill buildings in 1990. Another sixteen years would pass before the government of Saskatchewan stepped in and contracted the management of the rest of the remediation to the Saskatchewan Research Council (SRC). At the time of writing this book essentially all of the Lorado sites' remediation had been completed, with active monitoring in progress subsequent to ultimately releasing them into a long-term management and monitoring program.

The Book of Geoffroi de Charny

The Livre Charny (Charny's Book), by the 14th century French knight Geoffroi de Charny, translated here by Nigel Bryant with an introduction by Ian Wilson. The poem known as the Livre Charny (Charny's Book), by the fourteenth-century French knight Geoffroi de Charny, has never been published, Nigel Bryant's brilliant new translation of this long-neglected poem, based on a hitherto overlooked original Charny manuscript housed in Oxford, vividly conveys Charny's self-deprecating and extraordinarily down-to-earth attitudes towards the knightly career. Charny is surprisingly blunt in his descriptions of the mishaps and mortal dangers to be expected, from losing in a tournament, to homesickness on crusade, to being concussed whilst attempting to scale an enemy tower. Nothing else quite like it is to be found in medieval literature. Ian Wilson's introduction provides a markedly revised understanding of Charny's career as tournament performer, serving soldier, crusader, councillor, and finally royal standard-bearer: he was killed at Poitiers in 1356. Bryant and Wilson also argue that Charny's Book is so different in style from the Book of Chivalry, also attributed to him, that the latter is unlikely to be by the same author. Using the evidence of a hitherto unnoticed manuscript in Madrid, they show that the latter is likely to be a work of the 1380s composed by Charny's son of the same name, possibly as a kind of memorial to his heroic father.

History and the Hebrew Bible: Culture, Narrative, and Memory
This essay offers an introduction to select disciplinary developments in the study of history and in historical study of the Hebrew Bible. It focuses first and foremost on “cultural history,” a broad category defined by nineteenth- and twentieth-century developments in anthropology and sociology, literary theory and linguistics, and other fields of study. The first part of the essay comments on developments since the so-called “linguistic turn,” highlighting some key works on culture, narrative, and memory, in order to establish a contemporary historical approach to biblical studies. It then turns to questions of the Hebrew Bible’s usefulness for historical study, and highlights studies of King David and the Davidic polity in ancient Israel/Judah, to show how scholars of the Bible have done historical work in recent years. And finally, it provides a case study of the book of Joshua, demonstrating how historians can utilize biblical texts as sources for cultural history.
Kingship and Memory in Ancient Judah

Kingship and Memory in Ancient Judah

The book addresses the question of how postmonarchic society in ancient Judah remembered and imagined its monarchy, and kingship in general, as part of its past, present, and future. How did Judeans of the early Second Temple period conceive of the monarchy? By way of a thorough analysis of Judean discourse in this era, Kingship and Memory in Ancient Judah argues that ancient Judeans had no single way of remembering and imagining kingship. In fact, their memory and imaginary was thoroughly multivocal, and necessarily so. Judean historiographical literature evinces a mindset that was unsure of the monarchic past and how to understand it-multiple viewpoints were embraced and brought into conversation with one another. Similarly, prophetic literature, which drew on the discursive themes of the remembered past, envisions a variety of outcomes for kingship's future. Historiographical and prophetic literature thus existed in a kind of feedback loop, enabling, informing, and balancing each other's various understandings of kingship as part of Judean society and life. Through its investigation of kingship in Judean discourse, this monograph contributes to our knowledge of literature and literary culture in ancient Judah and also makes a significant contribution to questions of history and historiographical method in biblical studies.

A Journey In My Head Unintended consequences. Unknown unknowns. The "Streisand Effect". Call it what you want, but the outcomes of our actions are often unexpected or even the opposite of our intentions. A newspaper hacking a child's cellphone messages to get a story that ruins and closes the newspaper. The local council trying to block a schoolgirl's blogs about her school meals that meant it went viral. Bankers fixing interest rates for short-term gains not understanding the long-term outcomes for their company or industry. And of course the mother of the phrase, the Hollywood film star who wanted to block an aerial photograph of her California home. It all begins with the theft of a boat and ends up with the seconds ticking away towards the end of the Universe. Jack and Helen Riley are back in the thick of it, but who knows how things will turn out. That is the unknown unknown.

Two decades after radiocarbon dating declared the Turin Shroud a mediaeval fake, brand-new historical discoveries strongly suggest that this famous cloth, with its extraordinary photographic imprint, is genuinely Christ's shroud after all. This book boldly challenges the current post-radiocarbon dating view - that it is a fake.

`This edition is more focussed on the leadership demands of managers both within the school and its community. This book can be used as a source of reference for anyone on a school manager position, written by people who practice management on educational organizations themselves, it deals with the fundamentals of what management is the many roles of the manager' - Headteacher Update `The book is clearly structured, with an informative table to contents. Each chapter ends with practical tasks which could be sued either by an individual at home or by groups in a training session. The book is worth adding to any staffroom library for the section of "time-management techniques" alone. If only I has acquired the habit of "starting each day by writing list of all the things that should be done that day and starring them to indicate importance" in recognition that "the critical distinction is between what is urgent and what is important"!' - Education Review `This book provides a thoroughly comprehensive guide to managing staff, meetings, motivating people, managing conflict, health and safety and much more' - Nursery Equipment This popular book has been thoroughly updated for its Fourth Edition. Targeting the contents directly to the needs of today's school manager. The book is now even more directed towards the leadership demands on managers, both within the school and in its community setting. New sections have been written to deal with emerging pressures on heads: - the increasing complexity of employment legislation - the management of risk - performance management - flexibility in the curriculum - the inclusion agenda - team development and leadership - the effect of the government's new approach to early years education. Recent research and developments have been incorporated and the content has been extensively updated. The authors' fresh and readable style, coupled with their use of proven interactive exercises, makes the book a first choice for busy heads and senior staff in all schools.
