Despite advances in research methodology and laboratory assays in order to identify factors associated with chronic periodontal disease, it is still unclear how to potentially predict periodontal disease progression. Saliva, a secretion of the salivary and mucous glands, is of major importance in the maintenance of oral health. The fluid is readily accessible via a totally no invasive collection method, and contains locally produced microbial and host response mediators. Gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) is a serum exudate found in the gingival sulcus. As the fluid traverses from the microcirculation across inflamed periodontal tissues, it carries biological molecular markers gathered from the surrounding site. Extensive research has been done in the area of the host response biochemical markers of periodontal disease. It is unlikely that a stand alone biomarker will be able to fulfil the criteria of predicting future disease destruction.This book highlights recent advances in the development of salivary proteomic, genomic and microbial biomarkers for periodontal diagnosis & reviews the utility of saliva and GCF biomarkers as a potential predictor of periodontal disease progression.

The use of periodontal dressings has been widespread for many years. Recently, however, the value of periodontal dressings and their effects on periodontal wound healing have been questioned. The squeale of periodontal surgery are commonly pain, swelling, inflammation, and bleeding. Thus, many periodontists advocate that some form of protection should be applied over the injurious tissue so that the affected area is shielded from further insult.There has been a lot of debate in this regard as to use periodontal dressing or not. It has been reported that the periodontal dressing accelerates the healing process but a general consensus has not been reached on the necessity of application of periodontal dressing on periodontal wound. Thus, this book has been undertaken with the aim to review the various concepts regarding periodontal dressing & it's uses.

Furcation is an area of complex anatomic morphology, that once involved is difficult to treat and maintain by routine periodontal therapy. The invasion of the bifurcation and trifurcation of multirooted teeth by the disease is termed as furcation involvement.Various contributing factors for furcation involvement are periodontal disease, pulpal disease, iatrogenic factors (root fractures and root perforations) during endodontic therapy, anatomical factors such as cervical enamel projections, enamel pearls, bifurcation ridges, and trauma from occlusion. It is the anatomic location of the pathology that defines the lesion and hence, it is essential to have a good knowledge of the anatomy of furcation, to ensure the correct diagnosis and optimal treatment planning and to understand how these anatomic factors may influence the etiology and pathogenesis of this lesion. Thus, the purpose of this book is to review the intricacies related to the furcation and its involvement and also throw some light on the various proposed treatment strategies for the furcation involvement.

R żne czynniki przyczyniające się do zaangażowania w tworzenie się bruzd to choroby przyzębia, choroby nadgarstka, czynniki jatrogenne (zlamania i perforacje korzeni) podczas leczenia endodontycznego, czynniki anatomiczne, takie jak występy szkliwa szyjkowego, perly szkliwa, grzbiety rozszczepienia i urazy po okluzji. To wlaśnie anatomiczne umiejscowienie patologii określa zmianę chorobową, a zatem konieczna jest dobra znajomośc anatomii futra, aby zapewnic prawidlową diagnozę i optymalne planowanie leczenia oraz zrozumiec, jak te czynniki anatomiczne mogą wplywac na etiologię i patogenezę tej zmiany. Celem tej książki jest więc przegląd zawilości związanych z futrzeniem i jego zajęciem, a także rzucenie światla na r żne proponowane strategie terapeutyczne dotyczące zajęcia się futrzeniem.

De invasie van de bifurcatie en de trifurcatie van de meerwortelige tanden door de ziekte wordt aangeduid als furcatie betrokkenheid. Verschillende bijdragende factoren voor furcatie betrokkenheid zijn parodontale aandoening, pulpal ziekte, iatrogene factoren (wortelbreuken en wortelperforaties) tijdens endodontische therapie, anatomische factoren zoals cervicale email projecties, email parels, bifurcatie richels, en trauma's van occlusie. Het is de anatomische locatie van de pathologie die het letsel definieert en daarom is het essentieel om een goede kennis te hebben van de anatomie van de furcatie, om de juiste diagnose en optimale planning van de behandeling te garanderen en te begrijpen hoe deze anatomische factoren de etiologie en de pathogenese van dit letsel kunnen be nvloeden. Het doel van dit boek is dus om de fijne kneepjes van de furcatie en de betrokkenheid ervan te bekijken en ook om wat licht te werpen op de verschillende voorgestelde behandelingsstrategie n voor de betrokkenheid van de furcatie.
