Archipelago is one of the most important and influential literary magazines of the last twenty years. Running to twelve editions, it was edited by Andrew McNeillie, with the assistance later of James McDonald Lockhart, and began as an attempt to reimagine the relationships between the islands of Ireland and Britain. Archipelago has brought together established and emerging artists in creative conversations that have transformed the study of islands, coasts and waterways. It journeys from the Shetlands to Cornwall, from the Aran Islands to the coast of Yorkshire, tracing the cultures of diverse zones through some of the best in contemporary writing about place and people. If there be any subject that can bring the multitudes to poetic expression it must certainly be war. This was definitely true of the First World War. Among its poets, Siegfried Sassoon and Wilfrid Owen most assuredly rank at the top. Winner of the military cross, English Captain Siegfried Sassoon's poetry is heralded for its brutal realism and its satirizing of overly patriotic pro-war rhetoric. Wilfrid Owen would meet his mentor, Sassoon, at the Craiglockhart War Hospital and follow in Sassoon's footsteps in lyrically relating the horrors of trench life. Owen died just one week before the final armistice. His poems come to us in several collected volumes, the first of which is included in this anthology. Further poems by Ivor Gurney, Isaac Rosenberg, Vera Brittain, Rupert Brooke, Alan Seeger, Robert Graves, Charles Sorley, Edgell Rickword, and others, are gathered here in this anthology. The elegiac poems of Ivor Gurney, including 'Requiem' and 'The Silent One', reflect his love of language, music and landscape, while the visceral works of Isaac Rosenberg, such as 'Break of Day in the Trenches', are filled with stark imagery but also, as in 'Louse Hunting', with vitality and humour. Each poet reflects the disparate experiences of ordinary soldiers in war, and attempts to capture man's humanity in the most inhumane of circumstances.
