Imperial Administrative Records, Part II

Imperial Administrative Records, Part II

Frederick M. Fales; J. N. Postgate

pokkari
This is the second of two volumes of the State Archives of Assyria devoted to the administrative archives. Like the previous volume, SAA 7, it includes texts from Nineveh, for the most part published originally by C.H.W. Johns in his Assyrian Deeds and Documents, but also in the Assyrian Doomsday Book by the same author. On the other hand, this volume differs markedly from the previous one regarding contents: the texts here are concerned in general with the provincial administration of the imperial provinces and with taxation. Although in recent years a number of the texts have been edited and commented on (by the editors themselves as well as by other scholars) for their importance in the study of the mechanisms of the imperial political and economic system, it may be useful to provide here an overview of the nature of all the documents included in the volume, whether better or less known, whether immediately meaningful or partially obscure.
The Land of Assur and the Yoke of Assur
This book brings together a selection of twenty-eight previously disparate articles by Nicholas Postgate that represent some thirty years of engagement with the nature of Assyrian society and government. Most are broadly synthetic and deal with general issues; they are a tremendous body of work, and this will be an invaluable collection for everyone interested in Assyria.

Third-Millennium Legal and Administrative Texts in the Iraq Museum, Baghdad
This volume presents the legal and administrative texts in the Iraq Museum at Baghdad that date to the Fara, Pre-Sargonic, and Sargonic periods, and that stem from illicit excavations. Sixty-eight of the seventy-four texts presented are published for the first time. Steinkeller’s introduction precedes the transliteration and translation of the texts, and the volume concludes with Postgate’s copies of all the texts.

nidottu
The second volume of the British School of Archaeology in Iraq's study of the city of Abu Salabikh. Where Volume I looked at the findings in the West Mound, Volume II deals exclusively with the graves that were excavated.
Assyrian Documents in the Musee d'Art et d'Histoire, Geneva
Three Neo-Assyrian legal and administrative tablets and four Middle Assyrian administrative fragments, probably mostly from Assur, are discussed here. The texts are published in copy and transliteration, with transliterations and commentary where appropriate. They include part of a large administrative list of textiles, including military dress, in the houses of high state officials of the reign of Tukulti- ninurta I. Of the Neo- Assyrian documents one is an administrative note to do with copper and AN.GA another adds to the small number of known Prozessurkunden.
