Big league baseball would seem to have been a hard sell in 1942. World War II was not going well for the United States in the Pacific and not much better in Europe. Moreover, the country was in drastically short supply of ships, planes, submarines, torpedoes, and other war materials, and Uncle Sam needed men, millions of them, including those from twenty-one through thirty-five years of age who had been ordered to register for the draft, the age range of most big league baseball players. But after a “green light” from President Roosevelt, major league baseball played on in 1942 as it would throughout the war. It turned out to be an extraordinary season, too, spiced by a brash, young, and swift St. Louis Cardinal team that stunned the baseball world by winning the World Series. The 1942 season would be overshadowed by war, though, with many people wondering whether it was really all right for four hundred seemingly healthy and athletic men to play a child’s game and earn far more money than the thousands of young Americans whose lives were at risk as they fought the Germans and Japanese abroad. In Season of ’42, veteran sportswriter Jack Cavanaugh takes a look at this historic baseball season, how it was shaped and affected by the war and what, ultimately, it meant to America.

Win one for The Gipper. Has there ever been a better-known and widely-used exhortative phrase in sports? Not likely. But who was the “Gipper,” this mythical-like sports figure whose nickname has aroused, in turn, awe, wonderment, curiosity, and amusement since the second decade of the twentieth century, and why is his story important? Answering those questions is the formidable task taken on here by veteran sportswriter Jack Cavanaugh, whose Pulitzer Prize-nominated biography of boxing legend Gene Tunney was referred to as “impressively researched and richly detailed” by Sports Illustrated. More than eight decades after his death, George Gipp is still regarded by football historians as Notre Dame’s best all-around player. And it was Gipp and his legendary coach, Knute Rockne, who were largely responsible for putting the small Midwestern all-male school on the map. Like Cavanaugh’s other critically acclaimed books, The Gipper is also a period piece, with a considerable focus on the era before, during, and immediately after WWI. It details the changes that the country underwent during that time, including the onset of Prohibition and the gangs that it spawned in the Midwest such as those active in the South Bend area and in nearby Chicago, headed by the notorious Al Capone.

A storm of rebellion is gathering, and its dark clouds overshadow Yale College. First-year student Asa Rush isn't surprised that he's one of a handful of Christians on campus. After all, he's been recruited by President Timothy Dwight to help bring revival to the school. Once a bastion of faith, Yale is now a hotbed of atheism, following on the tails of the popular French revolution. But fellow student Eli Cooper is determined to make Asa's life miserable -- especially when both men fall in love with the sensuous, wealthy, and mysterious Annabelle Byrd. Just when Asa thinks things can't get worse, Dr. Dwight charges Asa with a shocking commission that shakes him to the core. As America, barely two decades old, faces its first divisive presidential election, voters arm themselves in anticipation of the outcome. Asa and Eli are caught in the eye of the storm. Is the battle political or spiritual? Will the nation choose revolution or revival? And when the winds subside, who will be left standing? Inspired by actual revival events, this third book in a series of four explores the personal and spiritual upheaval that occurs when the Holy Spirit stirs the waters of our souls.

Like a deadly disease, sin has infected the American colony of Havenhill, Connecticut, and Josiah Rush seems to be the only person who sees the evil that has gripped the town. Blamed for a fire that nearly destroyed the colony seven years ago, Josiah spent seven years in exile. Now, having returned as pastor of First Church, his cries of alarm fall on deaf ears. Determined to save the town he loves, Josiah Rush endures personal attacks as he battles an insidious unseen enemy who is equally determined to use the town for its own immoral purposes. With historical appearances by Great Awakening preachers Jonathan Edwards and George Whitefield, this novel portrays spiritual revival as the only cure for a sin-sick nation.
