Since 1945, the UN has been actively engaged in conceptualizing strategies for both economic development and a sustainable environment. From a broad historical perspective, Development without Destruction sketches the role played by organizations and individuals in the UN system in developing and consolidating principles of international law and international governance with respect to natural resource management. Nico Schrijver highlights the UN's efforts to generate and implement strategies to resolve tensions between economic development and environmental protection, conservation and exploitation, sovereignty and internationalism, and armed conflict and peaceful access to natural resources. Schrijver's thorough analysis is an indispensable guide to management of the critical environmental issues on today's global agenda.

How to teach English language learners has been among the most contentious - indeed, most politicized - issues in American education over the past three decades. Meeting the pedagogical needs of these children, the fastest-growing population in U.S. schools, is a formidable challenge in itself. Educators’ mission is further complicated by external factors including the English-only movement, anti-immigrant agitation, resistance to civil-rights laws, attacks on bilingual education, mandates for high-stakes testing and other misguided "reforms", uninformed media coverage, and legislators’ one-size-fits-all responses to diverse students. In the 18 essays collected here, James Crawford analyzes the policies and politics behind these conflicts, critiques the strategies and tactics employed, and suggests ways to improve advocacy on behalf of English language learners.

THE AGE OF THE AVIATOR is the story of a unique period in history. It was a time when no one was yet certain of the potential of flight and when the task of testing its limits fell to a handful of eccentric and ingenious daredevils. This sweeping novel describes the century-long life of one such adventurer: someone who loved danger more than safety; a man of common origins who rose to uncommon heights and lifted up a generation of people with him.

The Australian court system continues to be the subject of debate and disagreement. Since the appearance of the first edition, Australian Courts of Law has been the standard work on the Australian court system. Now fully revised and updated, it provides a succinct guide to, and analysis of Australian courts and tribunals, their jusrsidiction and their functioning. Australian Courts of Law provides authoritative and comprehensive coverage of all material pertaining to Australian sources. Controversial issues in recent years have included the need for better case management procedures by courts, the growing importance of alternative dispute resolution, and the relationship between courts and tribunals, as well as between specialist and generalist courts. The book traces the development of the Australian court system from their English and colonial origins and gives an up-to-date account of the modern system. Australian Courts of Law is essential reading for all law students and high school legal studies students, and is recommended for anyone seeking an introduction to the Australian courts and the Australian legal system, or interested in further information on their workings and problems.
The International Law Commission's Articles on State Responsibility
In 2001 the International Law Commission completed its work on State responsibility, begun 40 years previously. The Articles on Responsibility of States for Internationally Wrongful Acts marks a major step in the codification and progressive development of international law, comparable in significance to the Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties. The Articles cover such topics as attributing conduct to the State; defining when there has been a breach of international law and the excuses or justifications for breaches; reparation for injustices, the invocation of responsibility, especially standing of States in the public interest, and the rules relating to countermeasures. The Articles develop basic concepts of international law, in particular peremptory norms and obligations to the international community as a whole. They signal definitively how international law has moved away from a purely bilateral conception of responsibility to accommodate categories of general public interest (human rights, the environment etc.).

Bilingualism is a reality that many Americans still find difficult to accept; hence the prominence of English-only activism in U.S. politics. This collection of essays analyzes the sources of the anti-bilingual movement, its changing directions, and its impact on education policy. The book also explores efforts to resist the English-only trend, including projects to revitalize native American languages.
