A new edition of James Joyce's masterpiece, based on the original 1922 edition, now considered the definitive text'Everybody knows now that Ulysses is the greatest novel of the century' Anthony BurgessFollowing the events of one single day in Dublin, the 16th of June 1904, and what happens to the characters Stephen Dedalus, Leopold Bloom and his wife Molly, Ulysses has been censored, attacked and even deemed blasphemous. Ceaselessly inventive, garrulous, sorrowful, vulgar, lyrical and ultimately redemptive, it confirms Joyce's belief that literature 'is the eternal affirmation of the spirit of man'. 'Ulysses is a living, shifting, deeply humane text that is also very funny. It makes the world bigger' Anne EnrightWith a new introduction by Andrew Gibson

The Cambridge Ulysses: The 1922 Text with Essays and Notes
James Joyce's Ulysses is considered one of the greatest novels of the twentieth century. This new edition – first published in 2022 to celebrate the centenary of the book's first publication – helps readers to understand the pleasures of this monumental work and to grapple with its challenges. Copiously equipped with maps, photographs, and explanatory footnotes, it provides a vivid and illuminating context for the experiences of Leopold Bloom, Stephen Dedalus, and Molly Bloom, as well as Joyce's many other Dublin characters, on June 16, 1904. Featuring a facsimile of the historic 1922 Shakespeare and Company text, this version includes Joyce's own errata as well as references to amendments made in later editions. Each of the eighteen chapters of Ulysses is introduced by a leading Joyce scholar. These richly informative pieces discuss the novel's plot and allusions, while exploring crucial questions that have puzzled and tantalized readers over the last hundred years.

Ulysses is a modernist novel by Irish writer James Joyce. Parts of it were first serialized in the American journal The Little Review from March 1918 to December 1920, and the entire work was published in Paris by Sylvia Beach on 2 February 1922, Joyce's fortieth birthday. It is considered one of the most important works of modernist literature and has been called "a demonstration and summation of the entire movement." According to Declan Kiberd, "Before Joyce, no writer of fiction had so foregrounded the process of thinking."Ulysses chronicles the appointments and encounters of the itinerant Leopold Bloom in Dublin in the course of an ordinary day, 16 June 1904.Ulysses is the Latinised name of Odysseus, the hero of Homer's epic poem the Odyssey, and the novel establishes a series of parallels between the poem and the novel, with structural correspondences between the characters and experiences of Bloom and Odysseus, Molly Bloom and Penelope, and Stephen Dedalus and Telemachus, in addition to events and themes of the early 20th-century context of modernism, Dublin, and Ireland's relationship to Britain. The novel is highly allusive and its prose imitates the styles of different periods of English literature.

James Joyce’s deeply personal and “most memorable novel” (H. G. Wells) detailing the spiritual and artistic awakening of Stephen Dedalus, now freshly repackaged for the Union Square & Co. Signature Classics line. James Joyce’s semi-autobiographical first novel explores the author’s own love-hate relationship with Ireland through Stephen Dedalus, Joyce’s literary alter ego. Dedalus yearns to be an artist, but must first overcome the aspects of Irish society, like school and the church, that he feels restrains his creativity and stifles his soul. Joyce’s use of experimental literary techniques, including stream of consciousness, is on full display in his first novel, which he further develops in his later works, Ulysses and Finnegan’s Wake.

Joyce’s early texts, which informed his later masterpieces, available for the first time in a comprehensive critical edition This book offers the first critical edition of the forty short texts James Joyce called “epiphanies.” Among Joyce’s earliest literary compositions, although published posthumously, the epiphanies are a series of highly polished miniatures, many of which Joyce reused in his later writings. By presenting the epiphanies with background details and thorough annotations, this edition provides a vivid insight into his art.Collected Epiphanies of James Joyce features an introduction to the texts that summarizes Joyce’s concept of epiphany; their biographical and cultural context; their echoes and adaptations in Stephen Hero, Dubliners, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, Ulysses, and Finnegans Wake; and their critical reception and editorial history. Each epiphany is transcribed directly from its original manuscript, accompanied by extensive notes that include more information specific to each piece, as well as textual variants.Styled as prose poems, dramatic sketches, or combinations of the two, the epiphanies can be seen not only as lyrical counterparts to Joyce’s poetry in Chamber Music but also as bridges to the writer’s landmark fiction. This collection demonstrates that the epiphanies offer a paradigm case for studying the development of Joyce’s work as a whole, prompting a reassessment of their literary significance.A volume in the Florida James Joyce Series, edited by Sam Slote

"Joyce on kirjoittanut aika helkkarin upean kirjan..."Ernest Hemingway (1922)Odysseus oli 1930-luvulle saakka kiellettyjen kirjojen listalla Yhdysvalloissa. Monien lukijoiden ja kirjallisuudentutkijoiden mielestä Odysseus on 1900-luvun merkittävimpiä teoksia. Toisaalta taas monille sen loppuun asti lukeminen on osoittautunut ylivoimaiseksi urakaksi.Odysseus kertoo juutalaisen mainoshankkijan Leopold Bloomin, modernin Odysseuksen, harharetkistä Dublinissa. Kirjan muut keskeiset hahmot ovat nuori kirjailija Stephen Dedalus ja Leopold Bloomin vaimo Molly. Lyhyesti kiteytettynä kirjan juonena on erään ihmisen arkipäivä kello kahdeksasta aamulla kolmeen yöllä Dublinin kaupungissa, kesäkuun 16. päivänä 1904.
