James Joyce (1882 - 1941) one of the most influential writers in the20th Century modernist movement. In 1999, Time Magazine named Joyce one of the 100 Most Important People of the 20th century, stating that "Joyce ... revolutionised 20th century fiction". In 1998, the Modern Library, ranked Ulysses No. 1 and A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man No. 3, on its list of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century. This Omnibus Edition features his two greatest novels - A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and Ulysses, as well as his famous book of short stories - Dubliners and an example of his poetry - Chamber Music. -A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man- is heavily autobiographical, it is a coming of age novel where a young man gradually comes to recognise his artistic gifting. -Ulysses- is a novel that takes place in a single day, 16 June 1904. Joyce uses every literary technique in the book including the stream of consciousness that characterise his works. The characters and incidents of the Odyssey of Homer are set instead in Dublin amongst common folk. The book is both fondly describing in immense and accurate detail the city of Dublin and also dwelling on the squalor and misery within the city. -Dubiners- is a series of short stories, which like all his fiction is set in Ireland. They are incisive investigations into the inertia of Dublin society at the time. -Chamber Music- is his first full-length poetry collection, consisting of 36 short lyrics.

Ulysses chronicles the passage through Dublin of Leopold Bloom during an unremarkable day, June 16, 1904. The title alludes to the hero of Homer's Odyssey, and there are many parallels, both implicit and explicit, between the two works.Written from 1914 to 1921, the novel was serialized in the American journal The Little Review from 1918, until the publication of the Nausicaa episode led to a prosecution for obscenity. The book was first published in its entirety in Paris in 1922, but was banned in both the United States and United Kingdom until the 1930s. The work was blacklisted by Irish customs.

HarperCollins is proud to present its new range of best-loved, essential classics. ‘Welcome, O life! I go to encounter for the millionth time the reality of experience and to forge in the smithy of my soul the uncreated conscience of my race.’ Autobiographical in tone, Joyce’s tale of Stephen Dedalus’ journey into adulthood explores the intellectual and moral development of an artist as he struggles to overcome the ingrained Catholic consciousness of his childhood – a family life governed by Irish history, religion and politics. Realistic and innovative in its approach, the style of writing proved controversial upon publication in 1916 and the character of Stephen on a quest for his identity did not appeal to readers. However, Joyce expertly encapsulates the development of individual consciousness and the role of the artist in society in what is considered one of his greatest works.

For Joyce, literature 'is the eternal affirmation of the spirit of man'. Written between 1914 and 1921, Ulysses has survived bowdlerization, legal action and bitter controversy. An undisputed modernist classic, its ceaseless verbal inventiveness and astonishing wide-ranging allusions confirms its standing as an imperishable monument to the human condition. Declan Kiberd says in his introduction that Ulysses is 'an endlessly open book of utopian epiphanies. It holds a mirror up to the colonial capital that was Dublin on 16 June 1904, but it also offers redemptive glimpses of a future world which might be made over in terms of those utopian moments.'This Annotated Student Edition has full explanatory notes and line numbers for critical reference.

This Theophania Publishing edition of James Joyce's Ulysses is based upon the 1922 French first edition. The book was originally released as a limited edition of 1000 copies, followed shortly by the British edition which was limited to 2000 copies, 500 of which were burned by the United States Postal Service as obscene. The 1936 American Edition, whose copyright has been renewed by the copyright holder, includes a foreword by Morris L. Ernst, and also contains the decision of the United States District Court rendered by Judge John M. Woolsey regarding whether or not this book should be outlawed for obscenity. These are not included in our edition, but is an interesting fact. Ulysses is a novel by the Irish author James Joyce. One of the most important works of Modernist literature, it has been called "a demonstration and summation of the entire movement". "Before Joyce, no writer of fiction had so foregrounded the process of thinking." Ulysses chronicles the passage of Leopold Bloom through Dublin during an ordinary day, 16 June 1904 (the day of Joyce's first date with his future wife, Nora Barnacle). The title alludes to Odysseus (Latinised into Ulysses), the hero of Homer's Odyssey, and establishes a series of parallels between characters and events in Homer's poem and Joyce's novel (e.g., the correspondence of Leopold Bloom to Odysseus, Molly Bloom to Penelope, and Stephen Dedalus to Telemachus).
