Years ago, a wise man shared with me a story about making a difference. He told me about a big storm and abnormally warm currents that swept along the Florida coastline. Thousands and thousands of starfish washed up on the shore and were dying on the sand. When the storm had calmed and the sun came out the following day, a boy was walking along the shore, picking up starfish and throwing them back into the ocean, giving the starfish a chance at life again. A man walking along the beach noticed the boy and asked, "Why are you throwing those starfish back into the ocean? There are too many; it won't make any difference." The boy looked at the man, reached to pick up a starfish and threw it back into the ocean. The boy said, "Made a difference to that one." Adapted from "The Star Thrower" by Loren Eiseley, in The Unexpected Universe, 1969. While I was enduring my chemotherapy and radiation treatments, I met many other people who were experiencing the same treatments that I was going through. Many of them were driving a lot farther than I was. Many of them could not afford to stay the night in a hotel. One woman I met, Maria, was driving daily from Moreno Valley, some 200 miles one way in her 1991 Toyota Camry. She could barely afford gas to get her there and back every day. The proceeds of this book will be used to help others going through cancer treatments. When I can give money to people like Maria, that will make a huge difference. If I were to give the proceeds of this book to a cancer organization, the proceeds would be diluted over so many people in need that the money couldn't possibly help anyone specifically. So, the proceeds of this book will be used to make a difference in individual cancer patients' lives. I will seek the guidance of the doctors and the staff who helped me survive to recommend people who could most use the help to "make a difference in that one's life."

In the early chapters of this book, reference was made to Psalms 95 and the number of "LET US" phrases used by the Psalmist. One of the encouragements in this book is to have the reader personalize the key phrase. In place of "LET US", one should personalize the phrase to be "LET ME." Why should this be done? Because, the Scriptures principally teach what one is to believe concerning God and the duty God requires of each one. This is why "LET US/LET ME" is not a suggestion but a direction for one to live by. It is a mandate for one's life and ultimate happiness in the Lord. We learn that there many uses of the phrase "LET US" in scripture and that this is not a suggestion but a directive. We are challenged to become spiritually mature Christians by following these directives so that we may withstand the many challenges that come our way as ambassadors of Christ. But to do so we must prepare ourselves. We must become men and women after God's heart.
This book will study some of the subtleties that enslave and the beauty of being unchained and set free by God's Grace. Rev. James Perry, the author of this precious volume, brings his knowledge of God's Holy Word, combined with his many years of faithful pastoral ministry, to instruct and encourage contemporary Christians in knowing what's happening in the world, as well as how to counteract the manifold, insidious appeals of the wicked one in his attempts to deceive many when their own faith falters. The author not only bases his arguments in the infallible, inerrant Word of God which he faithfully interprets and applies, but also with his up-to-date understanding of new trends in society, contemporary philosophies, and fallible notions about reality which seek to influence contemporary thought and action, while negating God's unchanging Truth
The subjects discussed in this book are serious. Why are they serious? Because God is framing and asking questions that demand an answer. He is not asking rhetorical questions. He expects a definitive answer from us for each of them. A serious God is asking serious questions about serious issues and He expects us to take both Him and the questions seriously. In addition to God's questions, there will also be questions asked by different individuals. Those questions are in terms of what should be known by them from the Law and the Prophets. The Holy Scriptures contain many questions. Some of them are posed by The Lord to His people and followers. Others are posed to His opponents - teachers of the Law and the Pharisees - those who believed they represented righteous standards for the people to obey and follow. This book will examine some of those questions and attempt to ascertain the underlying query posed by those followers and opponents. There are also questions posed by individuals regarding various matters of life and practical applications to faith and practice, which are enlightening. These are not idle questions but those that allow us to know more about the heart and mind of the Lord for His people. By pursuing them and the ensuing answers, it is the hope that each of us will become more aware of the presence of God and His will for us.

After graduating, Schultz worked as a salesman for Xerox Corporation and was quickly promoted to a full sales representative. In 1979 he became a general manager for Swedish drip coffee maker manufacturer, Hammarplast, where he became responsible for their U.S. operations with a staff of twenty. In 1981, Schultz visited a client of Hammarplast, a fledgling coffee-bean shop called Starbucks Coffee Company in Seattle, curious as to why it ordered so many plastic cone filters. He was impressed with the company's knowledge of coffee and kept in contact over the next year, expressing interest in working with them. A year later, he joined Starbucks as the Director of Marketing. On a buying trip to Milan, Italy, for Starbucks, Schultz noted that coffee bars existed on practically every street. He learned that they not only served excellent espresso, they also served as meeting places or public squares; the 200,000 caf s in the country were an important element of Italian culture and society. On his return, he tried to persuade the owners (including Jerry Baldwin) to offer traditional espresso beverages in addition to the whole bean coffee, leaf teas and spices they had long offered. After a successful pilot of the cafe concept, the owners refused to roll it out company-wide, saying they did not want to get into the restaurant business. Frustrated, Schultz decided to leave Starbucks in 1985. He needed $400,000 to open the first store and start the business. He simply did not have the money and his wife was pregnant with their first baby. Jerry Baldwin and Gordon Bowker offered to help. Schultz also received $100,000 from a doctor who was impressed by Schultz's energy to "take a gamble". By 1986, he raised all the money he needed to open the first store, "Il Giornale", named after the Milanese newspaper of the same name. The store offered ice cream in addition to coffee, had little seating, and played opera music in the background to portray an Italian experience. Two years later, the original Starbucks management decided to focus on Peet's Coffee & Tea and sold its Starbucks retail unit to Schultz and Il Giornale for US$3.8 million. Schultz renamed Il Giornale with the Starbucks name, and aggressively expanded its reach across the United States. Schultz's keen insight in real estate and his hard-line focus on growth drove him to expand the company rapidly. Schultz did not believe in franchising, and made a point of having Starbucks retain ownership of every domestic outlet.
This book will reference some of the distractions and unexpected moments where a decision must be made. Will my choice keep me on the narrow way, or will a lesser general consensus become an alternative choice? The book is often tender, as accounts of loved ones and folks that have touched a pastor's heart over a long and fruitful career.
