Developing Grounded Theory

Developing Grounded Theory

Janice M. Morse; Barbara J. Bowers; Kathy Charmaz; Adele E. Clarke; Juliet Corbin; Caroline Jane Porr; Phyllis Noerager Stern

Routledge

Developing Grounded Theory: The Second Generation Revisited is a highly accessible description of the rapid development of grounded theories and the latest developments in grounded theory methods.A succinct overview of the development of grounded theory is provided, including the similarities and differences between Glaserian and Straussian grounded theory. The method introduced by Schatzman, and the development of Charmaz’s constructivist grounded theory and Clarke’s situational analysis, are clearly presented. The book is divided into seven sections: each type of grounded theory is discussed by the developer (or their student), followed by a chapter describing a project that used that particular type of grounded theory. Bookending these chapters is the first chapter, which describes the development and landscape of grounded theory, and a final chapter describing the challenges to the future of grounded theory. This book is ideally suited for beginning students trying to come to grips with the field as well as more advanced researchers attempting to delineate the major types of grounded theory.

The use of mixed methods designs for conducting research has become a major trend in social science research. Renowned methodological experts Janice Morse and Linda Niehaus present a guide to intermediate and experienced researchers on the possibilities inherent in mixed method research. They offer the basic principles of conducting this kind of study, then examine a wide variety of design options available to the researcher, including their strengths and weaknesses and when to use them. Providing examples from a variety of disciplines, examining potential threats to validity, and showing the relationship between method and theory, the book will be a valuable addition to the methodologist’s library and a useful text in courses in research design.
Analyzing and Conceptualizing the Theoretical Foundations of Nursing
Delivers all information required for the Theoretical Foundations of Nursing course By embracing the major conceptual and theoretical contributions to nursing research that are outside of traditional nursing theory, this book serves as a vital resource for nurse researchers, and one that is indispensable for doctoral nursing students embarking on their dissertations. Containing the full complement of information required for the Theoretical Foundations of Nursing course for PhD programs, the text supports the foundational skills needed for excellence in research and scholarship. The book examines in depth the components of nursing theory and the types of theory used in nursing research and practice, and teaches students about the nature and use of concepts and the development of critical thinking skills that are essential for nursing research. This text contains information for developing concepts and middle-range theory, using a variety of qualitative research methods, broadening theoretical scope by linking middle-range theories, and moving knowledge toward certainty by use of evidence. It also illustrates the construction of frameworks for quantitative inquiry, exploring theory in mixed-method design and how theory develops knowledge. Each method includes a description of the methodological approach and examples of subsequent concept or theory development. The text includes several methods for the development of concepts, micro- and mid-range theories using qualitative research, and a discussion of the new trend of moving these qualitative theories toward practice-based evidence. Each section of the book contains practical examples and supplementary activities that encourage inquiry. An instructor’s manual is included for adopters of the text. Key Features: Teaches the significance of and foundations of perspective, concepts, qualitatively derived theory, quantitative frameworks, quantitative theoretical development, knowledge development from research, application, and evidence Focuses on current nursing research and how it is used in practice today Demonstrates the significant relationship between theory, research, knowledge development, evidence, and practice Promotes excellence in scholarship and research Includes an extensive instructor’s manual

Qualitative Health Research

The leading figure in qualitative health research (QHR), Janice M. Morse, asserts that QHR is its own separate discipline—distinct from both traditional health research and other kinds of qualitative research—and examines the implications of this position for theory, research, and practice. She contends that the health care environments transform many of the traditional norms of qualitative research and shape a new and different kind of research tradition. Similarly, the humanizing ethos of qualitative health research has much to teach traditional researchers and practitioners in health disciplines. She explores how the discipline of QHR can play out in practice, both in the clinic and in the classroom, in North America and around the world. A challenging, thought-provoking call to rethink how to conduct qualitative research in health settings.

README FIRST for a User's Guide to Qualitative Methods

Lyn Richards; Janice M. Morse

The Third Edition of this popular text offers those new to qualitative inquiry a clear and practical guide to the reasons for doing qualitative research, matching questions to appropriate methods, and the tasks necessary for getting started. In their direct and friendly style, Lyn Richards and Janice M. Morse help researchers reflect on why they are working qualitatively and how to choose an appropriate method, and then approach confidently the tasks of research design, data making, coding, analyzing, and, finally, writing up results. "This text offers current thinking in the field. The authors are well-established qualitative researchers and have pulled off a great text for the beginning researcher." - Matthew A. Eichler,Texas State University–San Marcos"The key strength of this text is the discussion and presentation of how to think about qualitative research. This is the only text that discusses the process of thinking before doing at any stage of the research project, from the general idea to the writing up and submitting for publication." - Ruth Segal, Seton Hall University"The text is very clear and well organized, and accessible for new students. In comparison to many other introductory texts, it really brings to the fore the need for theoretical and methodological coherence." - Irina L. G. Todorova, Northeastern University

Patient falls continue to be a serious concern within hospitals, nursing homes, and other health care facilities. When caring for elderly and disabled patients, a fall prevention program is vital. This authoritative and practical book outlines the process for developing and maintaining a fall prevention program in health care institutions. Morse presents over two decades of research as well as the highly acclaimed Morse Fall Scale, which has been adopted by the VA Hospital System and numerous hospitals around the United States. This extensively revised edition serves the dual purpose of providing practical, "how-to" guidelines as well as presenting cutting-edge research on patient falls. The first section on clinical application discusses the complete process of implementing a fall prevention program using the Morse Fall Scale. The research section of the book explains how the scale works, and provides information on evaluating the incidence, frequency, and severity of falls. Highlights of this book: Thoroughly revised with three new chapters, a new research section, and a revised appendix Contains key clinical applications, such as monitoring falls, predicting physiologically anticipated falls, and conducting a fall assessment Research section contains appendices on determining the level of fall risk, suggested methods for testing the Morse Fall Scale, and fall rates This book contains all the essentials needed to implement and coordinate a fall prevention program. A definite must-read for nurse and hospital administrators, nurse and clinical managers, and risk managers."
The Nature of Qualitative Evidence

The Nature of Qualitative Evidence

What constitutes qualitative evidence? This book breaks new ground by providing urgently needed standards for qualitative inquiry and addresses the significant issues of what constitutes qualitative evidence. In particular, this book will address the place of qualitative evidence in the planning delivery, and evaluation of health care. The authors first examine the status of qualitative research as evidence versus "opinion." They then examine such topics as: who decides what counts as evidence, the nature of outcomes, how to evaluate qualitative evidence, constructing evidence within the qualitative project, and research utilization and qualitative research. They conclude with perspectives on the issue of standards for qualitative investigation.
