Las tortugas marinas E. imbricata y C. caretta son consideradas especies fundamentales en ecosistemas marinos como arrecifes de coral y praderas de pastos marinos. Sin embargo, estas especies est n en riesgo de extinci n debido, principalmente, a la presi n antr pica. El uso de herramientas moleculares en el estudio de la variabilidad gen tica del mtDNA en estas especies adquiere importancia, ya que permite realizar aportes al conocimiento que se podr n emplear en futuras metodolog as y estrategias de conservaci n.
