Of what particular value is Psalm 119 to the counselor? First, individual verses, like those in Proverbs, will be of value for counselors to expound, apply and then ask counselees to memorize so that they may use them as "Portable truth." Second, since every verse in one way or another points to the Scriptures, the importance of and the need for learning and living according to the Bible is brought forward by the Psalm (precisely what most Christians need to learn). Third, there is much particularized help for afflicted, suffering, sinning, puzzled Christians-just the stuff of which counseling is made. All-in-all, you will probably find Psalm 119 as helpful as any book in the Bible for use in counseling once you have come to know it and learn how to use it.But this is not simply a book about counseling. The 119th Psalm is the prayer notebook of a man who solved every problem by learning and obeying the Scriptures. In verse after verse, he explained how he personally was helped, guided, and sustained in every area of his life. Let Jay Adams help you use this Psalm to grow in your love for the Scriptures and minister it to others.

Every counselor will fail. But what does failure mean? What are some principal causes of failure? What can be learned from failure, and what can be done to avoid future failure? Since failure among fallen man-even those redeemed by God's grace-will occur, what can be done to rectify failures? This is an important study for those counselors who have not adequately examined the counseling practices which lead to failure. It is designed to aid those who want to reduce the number of failures they encounter and will lead them to success in the face of failure.

The Christian Counselor's Commentary occupies a unique space on the Christian's bookshelf. While it is grounded in a thorough understanding of the original text of Scripture, it does not intend to duplicate the content found in more technical commentaries. Instead, Jay Adams has given us an intensely practical study, explaining how Scripture meets the needs of those to whom the pastor and biblical counselor minister both in the counseling room and from the pulpit. The entire commentary series is written in Jay Adams' trademark style-clear, exegetically accurate, and accessible to all. Do not let the title mislead you into thinking this series is only for those who minister. Any believer who desires to understand the Scriptures in order to live pleasing to God will be richly rewarded by studying His Word with Dr. Adams.

Carl Rogers convinced a generation of counselors to listen and reflect while insisting that teaching is taboo. Though Rogerianism failed and is now largely pass , many counselors still hesitate to teach their counselees.Jay Adams shows not only that God obligates Christian counselors to teach, but how they may do so in ways that will help counselees both learn and "observe" those things that Christ "commanded" according to Matthew 28:20. He demonstrates clearly, using illustrations that will resonate with you, that effective biblical counseling requires teaching. This book, the only one of its kind, is must reading for every serious Biblical Counselor.

Some passages in the Bible are hard to understand. Some are commonly misinterpreted because of the failure to translate properly, outmoded language in translations, traditional misunderstandings, or cultural differences. Because many sincere Christians struggle to interpret them, I have decided to offer this book as a help.In this book, Pastor and Counselor Jay Adams considers fifty commonly misunderstood passages that have repeatedly arisen as he taught and counseled. Not all of his explanations are original. Indeed, if they were, you would have reason to suspect them. But in this book, Adams clarifies complex matters so that searching Christians can understand them. The goal of this book is that the Bible will be better understood, so that the great truths about the Lord Jesus Christ may be comprehended more fully and, as a consequence, the blessings of these truths may be extended to many.

The righteous . . . will still yield fruit in old age; They shall be full of sap and very green (Psalm 92:14).An older person may be like a fruit-bearing tree that still produces fruit in old age He needn't waste the last years of his life watching TV. He may still have a productive place in God's kingdom-if only he will. Most books that seek to help elderly persons major in sociological or psychological studies. Here is something different In Wrinkled but Not Ruined, Adams sets forth biblical commands and principles that will help pastors, families, and churches minister to elderly believers in a Godly manner. Adams applies scripture to the problems and opportunities of old age in ways that can make the latter years fruitful and rewarding.Don't miss this book if you minister to an older person, or are approaching old age and want to deal with these issues before they become problems.

It's happened to you many times before: your friend just seems down about everything, nothing's going right, and even the weather is dreary. You rack your brain trying to think of something to say, but words just don't come. Finally, you mutter something like, "I'm sure it will work out," or, "Just keep on smiling." Pathetic. Lame. And not remotely encouraging to your friend. So, what can you say to your friend? Should you possibly even do something? Dr. Adams defines Biblical encouragement, demonstrates its importance for the spiritual well-being of Christians, and then teaches you how to put it into practice. So now, instead of empty words, learn how to give useful advice and loving, biblical encouragement to your fellow believers.

Most preaching is boring.I don't get anything out of my preacher's sermons. From the minute he reads the text, I know what he is going to say.These-and dozens of complaints like them-may be heard in many gatherings of Christians talking seriously about their church. What's the problem? Is it all the preacher's fault?Jay Adams says NO Preaching is not a one-way street where the responsibility for communicating God's message rests completely on the shoulders of the preacher. The listener plays an active role in the communication process-for good or ill. This book offers help for the consumers of preaching. It will: - introduce you to some of the biblical guidelines that point out the listener's responsibilities.- confront and offer solutions to many problems encountered in listening to sermons.- outline a program to help sincere churchgoers sharpen their communication skills.- deal with the needs of those who must listen to inadequate preaching. And much more.

. . . The Lord, the God of the Spirits of the prophets, sent his angel to show unto his servants that things which must shortly come to pass . . . and he said unto me, seal not the saying of the prophecy of this book, for the time is at hand. (Revelation 22:6, 10)What do these verses mean? Have these things been largely fulfilled or should we be looking for them in the future? In this classic work, Jay Adams faithfully follows such biblical timeline markers, along with Revelation's angelic interpretations and its historical context. These lead us to a clear and satisfying understanding of the major themes of the book of Revelation.Revelation has fascinated and confused Christians through the years Adams reminds us of its ultimate purpose-to strengthen and encourage believers in time of trial.

Proverbs is a book every counselor should consider his good friend. It is a book with which, if he is wise and wishes to impart wise counsel, he will want to become as familiar as possible. And as he becomes increasingly familiar with its teachings, he will discover himself using it more and more in the process of counseling. Indeed, soon he will want to learn the whole of it as quickly as possible so that he may have all its wisdom at his disposal at all times. One reason Proverbs is so helpful to the counselor is that a proverb can be seen as portable truth. It is often a generalized truth compacted into a vivid or picturesque situation that may be readily learned, easily memorized, carried about in one's mind, and applied to any number of life's situations as they occur. Both the general principle and the method of application are transportable. For counselees who are in the process of learning how to address a variety of circumstances in a truly biblical way, the practical usefulness that a proverb supplies is phenomenal.

The Gospel of JohnSince counselors are so intimately involved in dealing with people of various sorts, the great number of persons with whom Jesus deals in this Gospel (from Nicodemus to Judas) provides rich material for them. Counselors may learn much from the ways in which Jesus approaches, confronts, and changes these persons. No two are dealt with in exactly the same way. Jesus meets each one in his own milieu, often using the elements in that milieu to symbolize the truths He wishes to teach. The Letters of John . . . and JesusYes, Jesus Himself composed letters (in Revelation) to seven different churches and dictated them to John. That apostle was himself the author of three other epistles. All ten letters give us valuable material for use in counseling. 2 and 3 John are themselves counsel extended to individuals who were in trouble or danger while the letters in Revelation are counsel to entire churches.
