Jean Améry

Vad är det egentligen som förenar allt det vi kallar liv? Det finns ingen allmänt erkänd definition av vad liv är, vare sig inom fysik, kemi, biologi eller filosofi. Det gäller även mänskligt liv. Vad som juridiskt räknas som ett mänskligt liv enligt aborträtten skiljer sig från arvsrätten som i sin tur skiljer sig från straffrätten.Hur livet på jorden en gång började är en annan öppen fråga. Kanske är det nödvändigt att lämna jorden för att få svar. Andra livsformer, på andra planeter, skulle kunna avslöja något också om våra jordiska villkor.Tidskriften Gläntas nya nummer gör ett antal försök att svara på dessa och andra livsavgörande frågor, i essäer, samtal, kortprosa och konstnärliga bidrag.

I Gläntas nya nummer samtalar den palestinska författaren Adania Shibli med Balsam Karam & Elisabeth Hjorth & Hanna Nordenhök. Tre samtal som har blivit en enda text. Här finns också konstkollektivet HAWAF som till Glänta producerat en specialversion av deras museum för Gaza, Sahab Museum, som går att vika ut ur numret. Dessutom ett kapitel ur Gloria Anzaldúas klassiska verk Borderlands / La Frontera, samt förintelseöverlevaren Jean Amérys text om självmordet. Samt dikter av Doaa Kamel, Sofia Junes, Leif Holmstrand och UKON. Och den tyska medieteoretikern Bernhard Siegerts genomgång av dörrar, och deras materiella och symboliska betydelser.

His experiences during the Holocaust were made famous by his book At the Mind's Limits: Contemplations by a Survivor of Auschwitz and Its Realities. Essays on Antisemitism, Anti-Zionism, and the Left features a collection of essays by Améry translated into English for the first time. Although written between 1966 and 1978, Améry's insights remain fresh and contemporary, and showcase the power of his thought. Originally written when leftwing antisemitism was first on the rise, Améry's searing prose interrogates the relationship between anti-Zionism and antisemitism and challenges the international left to confront its failure to think critically and reflectively.

Genom en blandning av essä och bekännelse låter Jean Améry sina genomlevda erfarenheter ligga till grund för en filosofisk diskussion om det moraliskt förkastliga i att försonas med det förflutna och vända blicken mot framtiden. Författaren gör tvärtom. Han vägrar kompromisslöst att gå vidare, att släppa taget om det förgångna, att acceptera det som hänt. Den 19 oktober 1964 hördes Jean Améry i tysk radio när han berättade om sina erfarenheter av intellektets sammanbrott i mötet med Auschwitz verklighet. Ytterligare fyra program sändes sedan om erfarenheten av tortyr, om det förlorade hemlandets betydelse, om känslan av oförsonlighet och om den judiska identitetens omöjlighet och nödvändighet. De fem radioessäerna publicerades två år senare i en samlingsvolym med titeln Bortom skuld och botgöring som nu för första gången föreligger i svensk översättning, av Tommy Andersson och med ett efterord av idéhistorikern Victoria Fareld. Jean Améry föddes i Österrike 1912. Han är författare och filosof. Främst berömd för sina självbiografiska essäer, som inte minst berör hans erfarenheter under kriget där han internerades och torterades, både i Belgien och senare i Auschwitz. Améry tog sitt liv 1978. Bortom skuld och botgöring är hans mest berömda verk och det första som översatts till svenska.
